weird banding with my 1280

I am having a weird banding problem with my new 1280 using MIS hextone regular and "ultrachome-style" B&W inks. After repeated replaced catridges, head cleaning cycles and clean test prints, I am getting banding for about the first 1/2 inch of the print and then it stops. The rest of the print is fine. The banding also only happens to images that are particularly dark on that edge. Another image which was say zone II-III on that edge came out fine. Any suggestions or ideas will be appreciated. regards mark sharfman
