Problem with CFS on 1160

Problem with CFS on 1160

2003-07-20 by blokebam

Hello all

I finally gave up with trying to print using the Epson 2100 and
decided to go with the MIS variable mix quadtones inks. I purchased
a new Epson 1160 and ordered the inks and a continuous flow system
from inksupply.com in the states. I fitted the CFS and followed the
instructions supplied and what followed was like all my Christmases
had come at once, beautiful black and white prints from an inkjet
printer.

For two days the printer worked fine but on the third day the yellow
ink (vm-quad-4-y) refused to flow. I followed the trouble shooting
guide and swapped the CFS for the original Epson cartridges, after a
few cleaning cycles all was well. I then followed the second
solution of pulled the ink through the cartridge using the blocked
line procedure and refitted the CFS. After all this I still have my
original problem. A few more details, all the tubes are full of ink,
The inks pulled through the tubes with out a problem and when doing
a nozzle check there is zero ink coming out of the yellow section.

Would anyone have come across this problem before or have any idea
as to where the problem lies or even better a solution. I have
emailed inksupply, com but the replies have been very slow in coming
and I am yet to have an answers to my problem. All help very much
appreciated – Bruce

I'm experiencing almost the identical problem with my 1160 with the
UT inkset. I already had the Eboni black ink installed and decided to
go the whole route and install the other UT inks. After installing
the CFS, the first two prints came out well. Then suddenly I was
getting near zero nozzle checks on the "yellow" ink. Like you, I went
through the whole routine with the Epson cartridge and the pulling
the ink through the lines. There was some improvement, but then the
problem came back. I think -- and I'd be interested in other people's
opinions here -- that perhaps the best thing to do at this point is
to just let the printer sit idle for a couple of days. If there is a
problem with foam in the cart, then this may be the best way to deal
with it, assuming you've tried to remove it first from the cart and
you've run the Epson carts.

Re: Problem with CFS on 1160

2003-07-22 by blokebam

Thanks Chris for your reply, one thing I did do was to let the
printer sit for fifty hours to see if the ink would settle but the
problem still continues.

Would I be correct to assume that because all is well with the Epson
carts installed that the problem must be either that the ink is for
some reason unusable or that the CFS has a fault? If this were the
case would anyone know how I could test the ink or test the CFS out
of the printer?

Also I would be grateful if some one could point me to a site where
I could find out more about the 1160 print head, how CFS connects to
the print heads and detailed drawings of the internals of the CFS
carts. I'm sure there must be a solution to this problem but it
looks very unlikely that it will be provided by the sellers of this
product. Any help that can be provided will be very much
appreciated – Bruce

Bruce,

In my (single) experience (1160+MIS-FS) there is no way that the foam
problem will go away by itself. You have to follow the instructions
given by MIS to the letter. This means drawing a *lot* of ink (I've
forgotten the amount) from the bottom of the cartridges. This has to
be done until the withdrawn ink shows no sign of air bubbles. Is that
what you did?

If the other channels are OK, and the malfunctioning one has no foam,
then there may be an air leak that will require replacing the
cartridge.

Bob Zeiss at MIS is usually very helpful in providing guidance.

where do you have the bottles? If they are too low the heads can't
suck enough to pull the ink up into the cart. I did have one friend
with the 1280 and for some reason he could not get his CFS to work no
matter what... MIS gave him a full refund and he bought a 2200.

My 1160 works pretty well... except for some of the expected problems.

Hi Harry
Yes I have followed the instructions from MIS. Twice I have drawn
120ml of ink from the bottom of the cart and the ink seems to be
clear of foam. If there was an air leak in the system shouldn't the
tube be full of air? Thanks - Bruce

Re: Problem with CFS on 1160

Bruce,
I have a 980 (which some say is the the smaller version of the 1160)
that would not print through the yellow head after recently sitting
in storage for a month. I did not have a CIS on it but had ink carts,
but the problem was fixed by switching out the cartridges with
cleaning cartridges, printing several 8x10 'prints' through the
cleaning carts (which I believe are filled with windex), running a
cleaning cycle, then putting back the ink carts...it then worked
fine. Don't know if this would fix your prob. but I know those
cleaning carts have worked great on my 980 both with the above
problem, and with changing from dye inks to Mis quad inks.
Best, Mark R.

Bruce,

The clue for an air leak is that the ink in the tubing gradually
recedes away from the cart toward the bottle. If your tubes are filled
with inks up close (less than 4", according to MIS) to the carts then
an air leak is probably not the answer. If there is an air leak, MIS
will replace the cart without charge (I believe.) Again, contacting
Bob Zeiss at MIS for advice would be a good thing.
