QuadtoneRIP installation

QuadtoneRIP installation

2003-07-25 by Phil Rose

I'm having a problem installing QuadtoneRIP 2.0. The installer tells
me:
"There were errors installing the software--Try Installing Again".
This message has shown up after every (many) attempts at installing
QuadtoneRIP, although there previously was no problems with
installation of
Gimp-Print (4.2.6) and ESP Ghostscript 7.05.6.

The Print-Gimp Error log shows a series of messages:
"Filter (pdftops, textops, imagetops, imagetoraster) cannot be found"

Can someone offer a clue as to what went wrong (and the reason for
those
missing filters)? BTW I have to admit being a neophyte with OS
10.2.6, having
just upgraded from 9.2.2.

Hi Phil-

I'm not sure, but I think you have to have installed the BSD sub-system- do
you know if you did that when you installed OSX?

Buried deep down in my OSX system there is something installed called "BSD
Configuration Files", whatever that is.

BTW, I've discovered that the QuadToneRIP version that I downloaded (when
I clicked on the link labelled "QuadToneRIP 2.0beta6") is actually version
2.0beta5, (or so it claims in the Get Info dialogue). I wonder if the installer
simply contains the incorrect version number, or if somehow the wrong
version is actually being downloaded.

It seems a couple of people are having a problem installing. It's unfortunate
that the installer package doesn't give more informative error messages.
Since just about all the installation does is copy files, there's very little that
can go wrong (I assume you have disk space). So I suspect its a wrong
diagnostic i.e. the installation went OK. Here's a few places to look:

Use the Finder, Go to Folder command and check these locations:

/usr/local/bin
There should be a bunch of files beginning with a "q".

/usr/share/cups/model/C
There should be many files with printer designations with "quad" in the name.

/usr/libexec/cups/filter
You should find a "quadrastertoprinter" and a "rastertoprinter-quad"

If these files are found, the installation is probably OK. Just proceed according
to all the info files. It won't hurt anyway, if something is missing there
should be a message about it.

Hopefully this will fix it, but please re-post if it doesn't.

These are remnants of older print drivers that are no longer used.

Phil,

When I first installed QTR I installed Ghost, Then Gimp-Print then
QTR 1.1 and then QTR 2.0. I was under the impression that QTR 2.0 was
an update and thus needed 1.1 to be there first.

One of the earliest 2.0 beta versions assumed you had 1.1 but all the
latest stuff is complete as dowloaded -- i.e. yoiu don't need to download
any previous QuadToneRIP or any version of gimp-print.
