Doesn't Yahoo specifically target what ads go to who depending on their
profile and past activity?
If that's the case...

This attitude is kind off ridiculous. While I do not condone offensive
ads, it's not our list
who decides on any of them, since we are here thanks to free services
like YAHOO.
If you want to shoot yourself in the foot - and unsubscribe from the
list - it's a free country,
but such an act of protest doesn't lead anywhere. Send your protest to
Yahoo directly.
Thanks for listening,
Jack

RE: [Digital BW] Offensive ad

2003-07-31 by Martin Wesley

I have to agree with Jack and others on this, and further point out that
there is no reason to deal with any of the pop ups. Just do what I do and
follow the group postings by e-mail.

Edit your membership to receive individual e-mails. (It may take Yahoo a
couple of days to make the change.) Create a folder in your e-mail software
and a rule to direct any mail coming from
DigitalBlackandWhiteThePrint@yahoogroups.com to be moved to that folder.
Also set your e-mail format to "text only" as Julian recommended. You then
can view the group posting at your leisure without having to struggle
through Yahoo's blizzard of advertising.

As to who sees what pop-ups and why, I have no idea, but we all do get
different ones. I speculate that it depends upon what particular Yahoo
server you get logged into.

Sanfo,

Ah! I see the pop up. Very small one on the homepage and other pages to the
left under the group name banner. It is rapidly cycling through "Click
here", a basketball player, a shot from the Matrix and two women kissing
(all though I could not identify the gender of the participants it switches
so fast on my computer.)

If you follow the link, it is company that sells posters including art
posters of photographs. So since this is a group dedicated to photography it
makes sense that they would buy advertising space here. The piece in
question is a photograph entitled "Kiss" by Tanya Chalkin and is being
offered of sale next to posters of "Flag Raising on Iwo Jima, February 23,
1945" by Joe Rosenthal. Also they are selling a bunch of Ansel Adams shots,
flowers, puppies in tea cups, etc.

I did not go through their entire offering as I have better things to do,
but personally I encountered nothing offensive. It all looks pretty tame
compared to some of the art I have seen but I guess offense like beauty is
in the eye of the beholder.

Actually, Yahoo is spying on EVERYONE who has ever been there buy placing a
miniscule GIF file on your computer, unless you intentionally opt out. Or,
use Spybot!!

I recommend you to talk to a psychiatrist about your depression caused by this innocent ad.

All the best!

Try the new Google 2.0 beta toolbar - it's excellent. It has a built-in
pop-up blocker that works extremely well.

Alternatively, perhaps you could contact Yahoo and ask if they could use a
heterosexual act instead? That might be less depressing....
