How to save for Lightjet Prints

How to save for Lightjet Prints

2003-08-01 by John

This might be a basic question, but I couldn't seem to find the
answer in the archives. I have some grayscale digital images. Is it
best to give it to the lab saved as grayscale, RGB or CMYK? They
will be printed using the Noritsu 3002 Lightjet Printer if that
makes a difference. My natural inclination is to save them as
grayscale. But I thought I read somewhere it's better to save as
RGB. Is this correct? Thank you!

John,

You should ask this question to the folks that own the Noritsu 3002 Lightjet
Printer. They certainly have some kind of file type requirements. I know
that when I use a LightJet 5000 or ZBE Chromira that the file type MUST BE
in RGB mode at no greater than 300 dpi.

john Lighjet fires RGB lasers at the paper so the file needs to be RGB. To
prep the file you'll need a calibrated monitor, a profiled printer to proof
with. Any decent lab has a profile for their Lightjet so you save as RGB
(usually 300dpi) assign the labs profile and print to your colour printer
using the profile of the printer. That will give you a good idea of the tone
of the print you'll get. Many labs do a cheaper rate if you prep the file
yourself. That normally means having a canvass size the size of the paper
with the image centred in the canvass as you want it. File at 300dpi RGB
with the image converted to the labs profile.
One of the quirks of BW is that it isn't ICC standardised - apart from Cones
new method - so you really need everything profiled so you know what you
will get back - otherwise it gets expensive.

John - The lab that I use for LightJet prints needs the files as RGB's. I
have a profile from them (they use the same monitor and white point setting
that I do) that allows me to anticipate what the prints will look like, and
I also have a correction curve for them that lets me adjust my files so that
they will print a neutral black and white. It's also useful to have the lab
print some sort of step wedge so that you can see what the limits will be of
keeping detail in high and low values (K percentages) in an image.

My lab uses Noritsu and Kodak printers, and both operate at 250 ppi,
in RGB.

A light jet is an RBG Laser printer, exposed using lazer, developed
usinmg chemical. I believe the image would have to be RGB, though
depending upon the lab they may convert and apply whatever profile
for you.
Ask them.
