New 8 Color Printer...

New 8 Color Printer...

2003-08-11 by Doug Fisher

I saw this in a Reuters story and thought others might find it interesting:

"HP, based in Palo Alto, California, unveiled what it said was its most
extensive digital photography line-up ever, including the first eight-ink
photo printer with studio grade paper that it said surpasses traditional
photography on image quality and fade resistance."

Hextone b/w printing, septone b/w printing, oct-tone b/w printing :)

Well it would be interesting if either Inkjet Control or Imageprint
supported it...but without third party RIP support the 8 colors are
unlikely to do anything for us trying to print BW.

According to Vincent of Photo-I, B&W is where this printer shines!
Looks to be quite interesting.

Some comments made by Vincent Oliver in the forum section of
http://www.photo-i.co.uk/

"The HP 7960 b/w prints are the best you will see anywhere; no cast,
no metamerism and 73 years+ life. I'm sure an A3 printer is in the
pipeline. HP also has the HP Designjet 120 printer, an A2+ printer.
This uses six inks and produces some excellent colours, I will try to
get hold of one for review."

"B/W has been totally addressed, now you can have 4097 shades of true
grey, compared to 17 shades on a normal six ink printer, the other
shades of grey are made up from a combination of coloured inks,
that's why you get colour cast's. Metamerism is also a thing of the
past, in our tests we could barely see any change of colour and we
used several light sources."

I have always loved my HP printers, but been annoyed
with the large void spaces at the bottom of the
images. Does this new printer allow for edge-to-edge
printing?

Another problem with my HPs was the paper path. They
didn't deal with thick papers very well. The got
jammed.

Is this one different?

:D - and what about 73 years and 3.5 month?

BTW: By my personal experience with HP company I'm sure it should be
7.3 years! No joke, they are able to say and to write absolutely
anything as marketing argument.

And what about size of ink carts? - 3.7 ml or less? ;)

And what about the cost? Switching both the black and the color
cartridges cost me about $100 for my previous 1220c. That's Norwegian
price, but still...

It's nice to see that they're incorporating true BW printing though,
that's definitely a step forward.

Epson has been the standard desktop photo printer for professionals and the dvanced amateur market for many years. They have been dealing with the issues and professionals since that time. Personally, I would rather put my faith and money in an Epson product.

By that measure Russ, I assume you use only OEM EPSON inks and media?

My memory is fading rapidly, but this sounds familiar. A new printer with
"light grey" cartridge(s) that produces great B&W prints? Hmmm. Where have
I heard that before?? :)
