B&W Printing

B&W Printing

2003-08-13 by njhilite

Hi Everybody,

Thank you very much for helping me in my search for the appropriate
scanner.

I think I will get the one from Polaroid, the SprintScan 4000 since I
do a lot of b&w in 35mm and intend to print out in larger formats.

Now, can anyone recommend a printer which is good, not to pricey and
does handle well b&w prints in various formats?

Thanks.

I thought you said you have the Epson 2200 (looking back at your original
post)...With this you can use the Epson OEM inks and a RIP such as Quadtone and get
excellent B&W prints. The good news is that it is free. You can also consider using
Inkjetcontrol/Open Printmaker although I have no experience with this. Or you can
pay $495 and purchase Colorbyte's Imageprint RIP which will potentially (I say
potentially because I have not used it - if you are starting out it can be quite an
upfront expense to fully load your system at the beginning rather building it as you
get used to RIPs, color mgt, scanning techniques etc) improve your colour prints over
and above the Epson driver. Otherwise you are looking at the (dedicated) (septone)
B&W ink sets. Personally (and if I am correctly judging wwhere you are starting from
in all this) I would start with your existing 2200 and use Quadtone and then progress
from there if you feel you need to.

Well said. I am in a similar situation, and the progressive approach is

If these inks become available before the MIS UT inks in 2200 carts I
may try one of the lighter gray inks with the standard UC inks in QTR
and IJC/OPM to improve the profiles I'm already using. Any info
available on densities of the gray inks?

What is the "general view" of how long it would take to flush these or the Epson OEM
inks thru the 2200? ie can one simply swap the cartridges and, say, spend one page
in transitioning from one ink set to the other?

Carl,

The grays densities are the same as the original Sundance/Piezo inks which
are the same as MIS-FS and PiezoTones.

Sorry another question...I am a little puzzled as to what one gets here..."=
The
Septone™ ink set comprises three neutral cool ink components, three warm in=

Depends which way you're going... When I change from Ultratone inks to
color inks in my 2100 it only takes a single cleaning cycle. The other
way the yellow tends to require two or three cleaning cycles before it
goes away completely.

2003-08-13 by chipcarterdc

Someone help me out here....As I understand it, the MIS B&W
Ultratones for the 2200 do not require any additional software to use
them -- you simply load a curve into photoshop and print using the
normal driver. The B&W Septone inks seem to require additional
software (the photoshop plug-in or pixelpicasso).

Is this correct? And if so, I wondering if I should just go with the
MIS catridges rather than the Septones, since both use 7 shades of
gray inks for making B&W prints; both have excellent longevity
ratings; and with the MIS ones, I don't need to pay additional $ for
software.

Or are there important differences between the 2 systems I'm missing,
other than the additional software issue?

I thought the UT inks are not yet available in 2100/2200 cartridges (only the MIS
Ultrachromes) and no curves have been developed for the 2100/2200....??

I think we will only need one additional light gray ink to smooth out
the highlights and since I use the 2200 for both color and B&W it would
be much easier if there is only one cart to switch when changing back
and forth.

Thanks for the info on densities Martin. Good to know that they are
matched to the MIS-FS ink densities since I already have data for those
inks.

[Digital BW] Re: Pixelpixasso RIP and Septone plugin for 2200

2003-08-13 by chipcarterdc

According to someone I emailed with at MIS, the Ultratone cartidges
for the 2200 are indeed available now:

"I'll do my best to answer all of your questions. We currently have
Ultra-tone available in cartridges for the 2200, but you'll need to
phone in your order, as they are not yet available on our web site.
 248-391-2163"

But none of this answers my question re: the Ultratones v.
Septones....

I've been running the Ultratones in a 2100 for some months now. There
haven't been any cartridges available, so I cleaned and refilled old
Epson cartridges. I've adapted two of Paul's 1290 curves to use with
them and have made several of my own curves as well, but they don't
really give me completely dotless highlights. I'd be happy to share my
curves with anyone who needs them...

Correct - I just ordered some. You will need to use either IJC/OPM or
QTR with these inks, but there are no IJC profiles available yet and I
believe that Daniel is the only one that has developed QTR profiles for
the whole inkset.

You can also try my curves for the Epson driver and EEM paper:
http://daniel.staver.no/img/ultratone2100curves.zip

They will print the images a bit bright, unfortunately I managed to
linearize the curves to a stepwedge that had been the victim of too much
color management. If you assign the Dot Gain 30% profile to the image
before converting to RGB it should print with the correct brightness. I
should probably take the time to redo the curves one of these days...

Use 'No color adjustment' in the Epson driver and 'Same as source' in
the Photoshop print settings.
