Also check out the Minolta Dimage scanners. For 35mm the new 5400 has some
nice specs, and my ScanDual III is a great scanner that was cheap (but only
2820 PPI).

Subject: [Digital BW] B&W Printing

Hi Everybody,

Thank you very much for helping me in my search for the appropriate
scanner.

I think I will get the one from Polaroid, the SprintScan 4000 since I
do a lot of b&w in 35mm and intend to print out in larger formats.

Now, can anyone recommend a printer which is good, not to pricey and
does handle well b&w prints in various formats?

Thanks.

For printing primarily B&W you need to first decide if you want a dedicated printer for B&W.

If you are willing to have a dedicated B&W printer you can then use one of several models of Epson printers, the 1160 and 12xx printers are popular and can be purchased used for cheap. If you want large format, larger then 13x19 then you're looking at a Epson 3000. There are lots of choice for inks in a dedicated B&W printer. My personal favorite inks are from MIS, www.inksupply.com . I've used their Full-Spectrum and Ultratone ink sets and have been pretty happy with both. If you want to print to only one tone you can use the Full Spectrum inks however if you want to be able to select you image tone or print on non-matte papers you'd be better off with Ultratones. Another popular option is Piezography (www.inkjetmall.com), I personally haven't had any success with these inks but lots of people love them. Having a dedicated printer has the added advantage of allowing CFS, bulk ink system.

I've personally experiences one system that allows you to get absolutely gorgeous B&W and Color prints from a single printer and ink set. Its the Epson 2200 printer with Colorbyte's Imageprint RIP, http://www.colorbytesoftware.com/imageprint.htm. This has the added advantage of working very well with Epson Enhanced Matte paper and very nice and inexpensive paper. Others may present other solutions but, this the one that I've seen and was very impressed with. So impressed in fact that I've decided to change over my printing to this system. Cheap this solution isn't, the Imageprint RIP starts at $495 and the printer can be had around $600 depending on where you buy it.

Hope this helps,

David
