Migrating to Quadtone RIP from Windows

Migrating to Quadtone RIP from Windows

2003-08-14 by flyfishingusa2002

I am in the process of migrating to a Mac system from WinXP in order
to use the Quadtone RIP. I have the RiP up and running and I am very
pleased with it, couldn't be better. However this is not a easy
path, my latest problem is when I tried to Install the Mac PS7
upgrade. I find that Adobe will not accept my old Windows serial
number. They want me to send them $149 bucks for a upgrade to the
full version because my qualifing product is windows and not Mac
serial! This is just plain silly when PS 8 is jsut around the
corner. Much the same is true to use the RAW plugin, I have Elements
installed on my Mac. This time they want me to send a letter of
destruction, they will refund my money for the plugin and then I
must purchase the MAC version....Silly or what.
Has anyone else found a easier way of migrating?

Fustrated,

Barry

If you still own the xp box - do your editing there (till PS8
anyways). Send your print jobs to quad tone rip through the mac box.
Printer sharing should be fairly straightforward through the mac.

There no way that you can send print from a windows pc to a mac, the RIP only wants
to be on a local usb printer and not a networked printer as far as I can tell.

I have solved the problem on a temp basis and am now able to load my PS7 upgrade
on my Mac. Now all I have to do is wait for Adobe to sort out my Camera Raw Plugin,
they have promised a refund on this, so that I can purchase the Mac edition, why the
hell they couldn't simply exchange it is beyond me.

The RiP on the MAC is well worth it. But to say you can't hang OSX is not possible is
BS. I have had Safari Help hang and not be able to quit it, not even with "Forced Quit"
and try shutting down a network PC while the MAC is saving a file to it. The MAC will
lock up and you can do nothing until the PC is powered up and the file save is
completed. Still, the switch is well worth it if only to get rip of not having a Windows
Registry. BTW you better like "Dragging and Dropping" !
If I could get all of my apps in on the MAC I would dump the PC in a heartbeat, but
the fact is that there are so many apps that are PC only I don't forsee any chance of
doing this. So the MAC is gong to be my Photo Editing machine while the PC is going
to be for everything else. I still have to find a simple and in expensive way of getting
my Canon 10D files converted from RAW to tiff using the MAC.

If anyone wants a sample print from the 2200 printed via the Quadtone RIP please
contact me and I would be willing to mail one or ten if I recieve a stamped self
addressed envelope.

You can use Canon's File Viewer Utility, but it is extremely slow. You
will also have to hack the Mac version of ACR to get it to recognize
the 10D.

Check the mac.com web site for the announcement of the new MS Office
for the MAC. MS bought Virtual PC from Connectix.

The new Pro version of MS Office includes Virtual PC which puts Windows
XP on the Mac. I did not check to see if Virtual PC is still
abvailabe. I had the standalone version of Virtual PC on my G4
originally and while it was a bit slow it worked. With MS's direct
input I suspect it will be significantly better. I took it off because
I needed more disk space on the Mac, but I plan to reinstall it so I
can run Picture Window Pro 3.1.

The trick will be getting PWP to print to Gimp-Print so I can use
QuadTone RIP.

The printer will be local USB - The mac should be able to share it.
You can also set up Gimp Print for ip printing.

Canon has a utility - file viewer utility. It is free but slow. try
www.powershot.com for the download.

I have had the same thing with Quick Time. If I force quit a second
time it works - don't know if that will help with Safari but it's worth
a go.

The thought of having XP on a MAC is to much. Virtual PC is a emulator and I just
can't see it being worth it, but I might give it a try. I think that I will stick to the two
desktops for the moment. The MAC still has problems, for example try to import
bookmarks to either IE5 or Safari once they have been lanched for the first time! But
there is no doubt "Once you have been MAC you never go back"

Regards

ps I recomend the publication " Switching to the MAC" The missing manual.....

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
