Oops!   In an effort to offer help with keyboard commands, I accidentally 
sent my email before it was done!   <Grrrr> I hate it when that happens....

John, another way to adjust memory of an application in OS 9 is to highlight 
the application's icon when the app is not running, and type applekey-I 
(letter I not the number 1).   That will bring up the Get Info box about the 
application, where you can set the minimum and optimal RAM sizes for the application.

You also asked about how to do this in OS X.   One of the great joys of OS X 
is that you no longer have to commit an application to a particular memory 
space -- the OS manages RAM for you on the fly.   It is one of the biggest 
improvements of OS X for people like us who run apps that gobble up memory, like 
Photoshop.
