networking all these boxes

networking all these boxes

2003-08-26 by Tyler Boley

Things are getting a bit complex here with multiple machines doing
different tasks. So for the first time I need to connect more than two
computers all together on a network. At this point it'll be 3 Macs and
1 PC, could grow.
Not being one with networking experience, the info looks like Martian
to me.
I'm being advised that a router is preferable to a simple hub, can
anyone comment?
Any brand recommendations?
Thanks,
Tyler

Hi Tyler,

One of the best web sites for Mac networking is here:

http://www.atpm.com/network/

Also read this five part article:

<http://www.hardwarecentral.com/hardwarecentral/tutorials/158/1/>

This will answer many more questions than I can answer for you here!

It's easier than you think!

For a small network routers are more versatile/faster than hubs and you want to go
this route.

I'm a big fan of Asante products as they are very Mac friendly:

http://www.asante.com/products/

John, thank you so much. I have all I need now and an Asante is on
it's way.

hi tyler...

if you're not interested in giving them all direct internet access, then
you can go with a hub or a switch. i'd suggest a 'switch.' with hubs,
all of your connections share the bandwidth. with switches each machine
gets most of the full bandwidth available. this is all
oversimplification, but for the price difference go with a switch.
netgear and linksys are commonly available. i use linksys and have good
luck with them. buy more ports than you need right now because you'll
use them at some point.

if you want all of your machines to access the internet directly and you
have dsl or a cable modem setup, then i'd suggest a firewall router. i
have a linksys in my office that works great and is a snap to setup.
with it, you wouldn't need a hub or switch since the router (depending
on brand/model) can provide that function for several machines (mine
offers 8 ports).

i'm the guy out in granite falls. email me off list if you need more
info or want to talk about it on the phone.

Tyler,
I have 3 Macs hooked up via ethernet to Friendly Net router. I also
have a switch from Iogear so I can switch monitors and keyboards. I
have 2 monitors and the switch works well for them, but I find it
easier to have 3 keyboards. To make a long story short, if I can do it
so could a penguin! There is a web site on Mac networking...I will try
and remember the name of it. The wireless stuff would be nice, but when
I set this up, it was still too slow.
Cheers,
trish

Thanks Trish, and everyone who replied on and off list.
I never claimed to be as smart as a penguin, but thanks to you I'll
get it done.
