Mac OS X and Linux only. No Windows version.

Kay,

Roy's QuadTone RIP is a unix based program and is available for Mac OS
X and Linux (with extra setup effort). You could ask Roy if he plans a
port to Windows. As far as I know Windows RIP's are big ticket items.

Fortunately, I have a Mac with OS X and QT RIP was the answer for my
Epson 2200 B&W and Color printing.

I'm VERY confused. I thought QTR was only for B&W ?

It is for b&w only
It is just an addendum to GIMP-PRINT which is an open
source unix print driver. For color one can use
GIMP-PRINT or the Epson driver to drive the 2200.
QTR uses oem inks to get closer to metamerism free
and/or neutral prints by limiting some of colors used
to simulate greys. QTR's strength is that one can
control how each ink jet prints its ink, so for a very
warm print, for example, QTR shuts off all colors
except black and light black. For a very cool print it
can use everything but yellow, actually you can tweek
it to make do sorta whatever you want. The only
problem with QTR and OEM ink is that there will be
highlight dots on certain images. But if one
substitues another shade of grey or two for let's say
cyan and magenta, smoother tones can be acheived.
In any case QTR does allow the possibility of printing
metamerism free B&W prints with a full color inkset.
It and Open Print Maker are the cheapest way for Mac
users to get decent B&W out of the 2200 color inkset.

Hi Kay,

Yes, I'm around some of the time.
Unfortunately, windows is not a likely port (as least by me).

John,

My comment was referring to the fact that I can print color and B&W
using the Epson Ultrachrome Inks and avoid the need to set up a
separate printer for B&W.

I usually print my color work using the Epson driver but recently I
have tried color via Gimp-Print and got some nice results. All B&W is
printed via QuadTone RIP.
