Darkroom to Computer Room

2003-09-05 by montynglen

Hi All,
I would like some suggestions on getting started. I have the tools
but do not know where to go from here. In reading "Files" there
seems to be a great deal of information for those who can use
Photoshop but most of the information is Greek to me. If someone can
recommed a good start-up CD or another method of learning the ropes,
I would appreciate it.
Thanks and everyone have a Great Week!!!

Monty,

>I would like some suggestions on getting started. ...

It's hard to know where to start. Harald Johnson's "Mastering digital
Printing" seems to get good reviews as a general book on digital printing.

I never had any luck learning software from a book. So, just diving in
might be the best way.

How much one wants to spend, what printer one has, and ink tone choices
might be the next step.

If you don't have a printer, the 1280 is probably the most supported and
widely available one at this point.

I strongly favor pigment inks, and while there are some new ones out there,
Piezo/Cone Editions and MIS (inksupply.com) pigments are the B&W ("quad")
inks most used by people on this list. Reading the webpages for those two
suppliers can tell you a lot. If cost is a concern, start comparing the
costs of the various inks and papers -- they can be significant.

The Epson 2200 and UltraChrome inks are, of course, excellent. However,
additional software is needed to do really good work, and there will always
be dots in the highlights, because that inkset is a color inkset with no
light gray ink in it.

For starter paper, I highly recommend Epson Enhance (aka "Archival") matte,
available at www.atlex.com for a very reasonable price.

I recommend buying ink in cartridges first before investing in a continuous
inking system. That tends to lock you into one ink.

Good luck on your journey.

Paul, thanks for the 'starting point' info. I can benifit from what
you wrote too. Questiion: what additional software are you
referring to that makes the 2200 print better?

There are several "RIPs" (Raster Image Processor) programs that do a better
job of controlling the color UltraChrome inkset than does the Epson driver.
A number of people on this forum are using these, and they would be the ones
to ask as to the relative merits of the programs. I have not used any of
them.

ColorBytes ImagePrint 5.6LE is a very good solution - much better
than the Epson driver for both color and black and white. Price is
$299 - worth every penny if you ask me.

Re: [Digital BW] Darkroom to Computer Room

Since I converted to a MAC I have not found the need for a color RIP for my Epson
2200, the output is vey accurate using the standard Epson driver using EEM.
Furthermore, I am using the standard profiles, I have found no need to generate a
cusom profile. For B/W I am using the FREE Quadtone RIP, this is giving me
wonderful B/W prints using the standard UC inks and a quoted print life of over 100
years . So why pay extra?

It's called QuadToneRip for Mac OS X and Linux:

http://www.harrington.com/QuadToneRIP.html

I was able to tweak the stock ink profiles and now getting excellet results - using
1160/Piezotone/Photorag

Re: [Digital BW] Darkroom to Computer Room

http://www.lexjet.com - contact Steve Cudzillo and tell him I sent
you. They usually require a paper or supply purchase with the RIP at
$299 but even if you purchased $100 worth of paper/inks you are still
saving $200 on the RIP. Also, their (Lexjet) support is LIGHT-YEARS
better than ColorByte direct - you can actually get Lexjet on the
telephone.

BTW: They sell the Epson UC Pigments for the same price as Atlex -
$8.90/cart and their 10mil Photo Satin is identical to the Epson
Premium Lustre.

Forgot to mention that I have no affiliation with them but purchased
my RIP from them and purchase paper and inks from them and couldn't
be happier with their support and integrity.

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
