OT My film scanner gets a rest from B/W negatives :-))

2003-09-09 by Keith Cooper

Hi

I use a Canon FS4000 for scanning all my B/W negs. One afternoon I got
bored, and decided to see what else it was good for...

The clear mounting material was from a developed roll of unexposed FP4
(oops!) that for some reason I'd kept. It is interesting to note the amount
of tiny specks in the film - even unexposed.

Also, I never knew that bees had hairy wings before :-))

Bye for now

Photoshop curve file format

2003-09-09 by Daniel Staver

I spent some time last night looking at the Photoshop SDK and writing a
little perl script to generate photoshop curve files based on a text
file. The text file contains the measured input values and the
un-linearized RGB values from the curve I want to linearize.

I'm considering to write out Map Settings (.AMP) files instead, since
they can also be loaded in the curve dialog in Photoshop and can contain
256 points instead of the 16 point limitation of the .ACV curves. The
disadvantage is that they're not easily modifiable by the user, and I
would have to figure out how to plot the curve myself.

I'm not sure if this is useful to anyone, just thought I'd let you know.
I'd be happy to share my script if there's any interest...

Modified Ultratone inkset for the 2100

2003-09-09 by Daniel Staver

I mentioned in an earlier post that I tried replacing the Cyan position
with MIS-LK and the Photo Cyan position with MIS UT-Y. I got the idea
from one of the experimental inksets that Paul posted earlier, and it
seems to work very well.

In effect I'm actually only using three inks now, but I can't really
tell the difference, except for som very slight midtone dotting around
30%.

The curves required to balance the tones are much more gentle than full
separation curves, and the highlights stay dotless no matter what
adjustments you make. I've made a cool and a neutral warm curve for this
inkset now and might go on to make a warm curve as well.

It's really easy to work with, and the results are great, so I might
actually stay with this for a while - At least until Paul finalizes his
dual-toner inkset...
