Anyone is using a network printer with Mac?

Anyone is using a network printer with Mac?

2003-09-11 by TB_Lin

Hi there,

Does anyone here use Mac to print to a network based printer (either on a dedicated
print server or a computer that is not a Mac) ? I bought a Hawking PS12U print server,
while everything works very well with PC, including Piezo plugin, I couldn't get it to
work on Mac at all. I couldn't figure out a way to tell OS 9 to print to my Epson 1160
hooked up to the print server, it seems that OS 9 requires a postscript printer to
work.

Kinda same story for OS X (10.2.6 is what I'm using). The Epson driver is not network
aware and doesn't show up in the model drop down list when I try to add a printer in
Printer Center.

If this setup won't work because of the printer limitation, what printer should I buy?
No I can't afford wide format ones nor dedicated RIPs. I sort of know that I need a
printer that has a network aware/compatible driver, but the question is which printers
have this type of drivers?

Any workaround here? Any suggestion is appreciated.

Li Lin;

You can setup to print through CUPS, or share the printer on the PC and
print through Samba on OS X. Try using "Dave" for a simple solution. My 2200
has a separate driver for network printing.

In the Print center remember to hold down the Option key while selecting add
printer to access advanced features.

You would have to use printer sharing.
Does the 1160 have a usb port or only parallel?

There are a number of very informed people on the OSX groups - you may
want to try there.

I have 10.2.6 and a 9600 using ethernet IP all using Linksys routers and swtiches.

As such, I have three print queues:
1.) 9600 (Epson driver)
2.) 9600GIMP
3.) 9600QUADTONERIP

I did *NOT* need to use the option key to get the IP address of the 9600

For the Epson driver I just chose "EpsonIP" and it found the IP address of the 9600.
For the two GIMP drivers I just chose "IP Printing" and typed in the IP address of the
9600 and chose the appropriate drivers from the drop-dwon list
