Driver 5.4 for Stylus Photo 2200

Driver 5.4 for Stylus Photo 2200

2003-09-18 by drbobhesse

I just installed a new 2200 (WIN 2K, P-S 7) and was interested to find
that the current driver (ver. 5.4) is changed and (to my eye) much
improved. Honest profiles are included for installation. Color managed
workflow produces reasonably neutral B&W prints with a long tonal
scale and little metamerism(Enhanced Matte with Mk). Virtually
identical prints are obtained if the profile is applied in P-S or in
the Epson driver. These prints are quite similar (in tone and with
respect to "metamerism" to those made with black ink only). (Prints
made with "Color Control" > "standard" or "PhotoEnhanced" >
"Monochrome" are a different matter and have a distinct, non-linear
cyan cast most pronounced in the highlights, but who cares.
Am I just lucky or has Epson really made a considerable improvement in
the driver and given us decent black and white at least in an ICM
workflow?

Bob, where did you get it? And how did you find out about it?

Stephen,
This driver came with the printer which I bought at Calumet in
Cambridge. I then checked and the same driver has been available for
download on the Epson site since about April.

Re: Driver 5.4 for Stylus Photo 2200 (IP5.6)

Just a note: If you use IP5.x from Colorbyte with the new driver, at
least in Windows you will have a hassle. The last 1/2 inch of print
will band and print lighter, solved by going to printer properties in
control panel, clicking on "ports" tab, and unchecking "enable
bi-directional support". Unfortunately, when you do this, although it
will print properly, Epson status monitor can no longer read the ink
levels. Colorbyte told me to install the driver twice, so the 2nd
copy, unassociated with IP will talk to status monitor with checkmark
in place. But I didn't want to hassle. If I had to do over again, I
just would have installed the old driver (on my CD shipped with my
2200 last November). The old driver has no problem.

My workaround is to switch on the checkmark when I want to see ink
levels, then immedeiately unchecking.
