QuadToneRIP for 7600 and 9600

QuadToneRIP for 7600 and 9600

2003-09-21 by Roy Harrington

There is an upgraded version of QuadToneRIP tuned for the
7600 and 9600 printers. This version allows for the finest dots
as well as the maximum dMax at the 1440x720 resolution.
I recommend the "Four Pass" selection on resolution.

This is just a "patch" to the ordinary beta8 version. Download
the zip file and double-click on Patch.command
This will install the changes.

I don't have any customized profiles but the 2200 profiles will
be a fairly good start. The main difference is that the ink limits
are lower for the 7600 as compared to the 2200. Multiply the
2200 limits by about .6 to .65, re-linearization would be advised.

just installed the QTR 7600 patch -- now my QUAD2200 output is posterized!!
(haven't tried things on my 9600 yet)

Note: I've dropped the QUAD2200 printer from the print center and rebuilt and
installed all the 2200 profiles and I still get posterization now.

Should I simply do a complete QTR beta8 re-install?
Anything special I need to do to uninstall?
Should I also reinstall GIMP from the ground up?
or is there something simple I'm missing?

I just re-installed the QTR software from scratch and my QUAD2200 prints are back
to being beutiful. Now I get to test the 9600...

Thanks for the info about the 2200. The gimp-print code uses the same
tables for the 2200 as the 7600/9600. Clearly (now) that won't work.
I'll separate them and get a version with new 7600 and old 2200 tables.
You can go back and forth easily by installing back and forth. I should have
a fix very soon.

Re: QuadToneRIP for 7600 and 9600

2003-09-23 by Peter Baumbach

Hi Roy,

many thanks for the update. Now the highlights are MUCH better (7600
with UC matte)! Nevertheless a few questions:

- Which dithering algorithm do you recommend ? I was using "Adaptive
Hybride". The lighter black ink patches of the ink pattern page do
not print uniformely. What might be the reason ?

- The overall neutrality could be better. I made a warm and a cool
curve and tried different mixtures. But there seems no way to get a
real neutral print. Some midtones have a tendency to print cool,
other are warm. How could I improve the neutrality ?

Many thanks again,
Peter

Adaptive Hybrid is set as the default but I've been mainly using Ordered.
The ink pattern page isn't very representative of real images -- high
contrast in the highlights and only one ink at a time. Multiple inks tend
to hide the dithering.

If you print out a stepwedge are you getting a clear transition from cool
to warm or vis versa? The basic idea of the ultrachome curves is to
put light-magenta and light-cyan in direct proportion to light-black which
has most of the warm tone. A slight selenium tone can be done by making
the light-magenta ink slightly more than the light-cyan.

The lighting can still cause a small amount of metamerism.

Can you measure the neutrality from light to dark or are you just going by eye?
