OT -- Spybot for internet advertising cookies detection

OT -- Spybot for internet advertising cookies detection

2003-10-01 by Paul Roark

A couple of recent internet addresses referenced in this forum have dumped
advertising "spy" software on my computer. I suppose we can't avoid some of
this junk, but we ought to fight the unwanted advertisers whenever possible.
In this light, I find Spybot Search & Destroy to be very good. It's a free
download and really seems to help get rid of the advertising cookies and spy
programs that these internet addresses put in out computers.

Spybot is available at http://www.safer-networking.org/

Paul,
I've been using Spybot for a few months now. But I've been also using
Ad-aware 6.0 available at
http://download.com.com/

What one spyware remover does not find, the other will. In fact I
find that both are needed. Sad but true!
Cheers,
Andre

Andre,

Thanks for the lead. I just downloaded Ad-aware and it found 145 problems
that had escaped Spybot. Makes one wonder how many more are lurking in
there un-detected.

I'm surprised that people are willing to download and run anything that
claims to remove spybots. Unless you've looked at the source code for the
removal utility, how do you know that it isn't installing something of its
own?

This is mostly based on good reviews on computer magazines (after all you have to trust someone: what do you *personally* know about the food you eat? Mmh... well, okay, bad example, we all probably had better not know what we eat :-).
All I know is that the system administrators in my company use Ad Aware, and that's enough for me.

Anthony,
There are no garantees!
I'd rather have something from a known source than have my computer
infested with spybots from unknown sources. I say unknown because of
their stealth nature. They may come from respectable sources as far
as I know (Yahoo, Google or whathever) but they do not belong in my
computer.

Here's a link to the Lavasoft home page so you can decide if its
worth it or not for yourself.

Cheers,
Andre
