Difference between various Epson models

Difference between various Epson models

2003-10-07 by cpeacock@comcast.net

This is another question that has probably been asked and answered, but here goes.

Supposing that I'm going to use MIS Quadtone inks, what are the differences, advantages or disadvantages between the Epson 1200, 1270 and 1280?

If you look at the specs, the performance should be similar, but is this really the case?

I guess it may come down to a used Epson 1200 for about $100, a used 1270 for about $200 or a new 1280 for about $350. The price of the 1200 is really attractive, but if I'm going to want to "trade-up" to a 1280 in 3 months, it's false economy.

I see the 1200 as older technology. I'm not sure it uses the same
variable-dot head that the 1270, 1280 and 1290 use.

I'd stay with the 1270, 1280, 1290 family because they all seem to be able
to use the 1280 driver and thus the 1280 curves, which are the most
plentiful. They appear to be basically the same machine.

(Whether Mac users with a 1270 can use the 1280 driver seems to be an open
question.)

There are also smaller versions of the 1280. However, I don't know which
ones use the same drive and can thus use the same 1280 curves.
