Other than having a nicer feel, is there any visual advantage to the 
heavier weight version of a given paper?

Flatness--i.e.,  less tendency for the paper (and image) to curl or 
warp (or to become "wavy" from excessive ink laydown). Also, 
thicker paper would be more opaque.
