Barbara,
I just by luck saw your message. Since I only read some of the messages, if
the subject line doesn't catch my eye, it gets deleted. So, be sure to
change the subject line when responding. Otherwise I might well
accidentally delete a message that I would have liked to respond to.

I have not recently been teaching workshops. However, I will probably teach
a workshop at Anderson Ranch in Colorado this summer, and there is a
possibility that I'll get involved with groups that have special interests
in B&W old photo reproductions -- a subject that has fascinated me for some
time.
I spoke with a scrapbook store owner in Santa Barbara today who has similar
interests and has regular courses on a variety of subjects. A venue like
that might be appropriate for quick and easy training that just gets the
people over the threshold or barrier that digital B&W printing still has.
Once the fear of the technology is overcome and there are positive results,
B&W digital printing is so self-rewarding that no further push is needed.
Lowering that threshold and getting people over it quickly is definitely
something I'm pursuing.
>Do you teach on an individual basis?
I have, but that is something that is very individual and needs to be
handled off list.
I'm encouraged that lurkers are responding to my recent efforts. We'll get
top-notch, archival B&W to be cheap and easy yet. I think the technology is
definitely there to do it.

Sanders,
Silverfast HDR is a piece of scanning software designed to "scan" TIFF files
of "raw" or unadjusted scans. I use it in my workflow which consists of
scanning to an "HDR" file with SF Ai, opening the file with SF HDR to set
the end point sliders using SF Levels and sending the file to Photoshop.
It is a nice tool for this if you got it free. When working with raw scan
files the data is often very bunched up close to one end of the scale. SF
HDR simply has a better on-screen Levels histogram and is easier to work
with. I have encountered some problems with SF HDR Levels if I adjust the
gamma as well as the endpoints so I wait to do these adjustments with Curves
in Photoshop.

"Professional Level Black & White Photographic Printing\ufffd
Produces a truly consistent image with little color crossover or
colorcasts
Reduced metamerism on 7-color black & white prints
Depending upon media, produces a black D-max up to 2.1

No details about how they achieve "reduced metamerism".

Hi,
I've been ringing around art suppliers in Auckland to see who stocks what
archival paper. One place had Schoellerhammer, which I've never heard
mention of on this list. I wondered if anyone had any experience with it?
It also comes in linen 200g and 300g.
thanks,

Subject: Oriental fiber inkjet papers AVAILABLE at B+H
Oriental hasn't officially released their new coated fibre paper yet --
they're announcing it at the PhotoPlus Expo next weekened. BUT they've
already
shipped it to B+H so they would be fully stocked for the Expo, and B+H has
put
it on sale now.
The paper is marketed as Oriental Graphica FB Glossy, and is available in
81/2 x 11 and 13x19 sizes. I bought a package of both sizes in B+H's store
in
Manhattan this evening; it is also available for purchase on B+H's website
(www.bhphotovideo.com). I asked Yossi, the department manager, how much
they had
in stock, and he said they had taken delivery of a pretty big shipment, and
shouldn't run out soon.
I know a lot of people on this list have been eagerly awaiting the debut of
this paper. Don't ask me how it prints -- I just got it, and now I have to
figure out how to print it using QTR on my 2200. (Being new to QTR, I am
open
to all suggestions in this respect.) I'll post more when I have something
useful to contribute.

Thanks, Steve, that is indeed a sensible idea. However...in looking at
today's posts on the 4000, I may wait a while for it. Neutral, cold and
warm tones just about cover the waterfront for me, plus the ability for more
toning with the color inks. My prints are seldom over 11 -12" wide, but it
would be nice to have 16" paper for better salon borders. _If_ it will
perform as described, $1,800 sounds like a fair price. Now...if I could
just get my ancient 1270 back in action after whatever ImagePrint did to my
system.

Subject: Clog causes solarization
This, I learned tonight.
Background Update to most recent:
* Printing well with VM on 1280.
* Decide to try UT B&W.
* Eboni Black clogs, no luck unclogging.
* Paul's new UT curves don't work either (solarized results).
* MIS sends replacement VM carts.
* (tonight) Install VM, 3 cleaning cycles - still severely clogged in
black.
* Decide to print anyway to force ink through nozzles. Print is
severely solarized.
So I then ran another nozzle test afterwards, and it's still
severely clogged. Try one more cleaning cycle and it clears this time
(hurray!).
I then print the same image again, which has not been touched in PS
since the first time I printed it tonight. This time it prints
beautiful - just like before this mess all started.
In comparing the two images side-by-side that came out of my
printer with the same settings, it's clear that I now understand the
digital solarization a little more, and now I can see that it can at
least be caused in part if not fully by the black ink not printing
correctly. This may present itself either with or without banding, so
sometimes it might be difficult or impossible to see that it's a clog or
lack of proper physical action on the printer's part that's causing it.
I would also suspect that it of course could be caused by a software or
curve problem, but nonetheless - the effect is the same in that the
blacks are not printing in the parts of the image that have fine black
outline against mitones, so those parts become strictly mottled and
devoid of detail with only midtones. It's like the driver prints the
mid gray background and expects the printer is drawing the detail using
black only, but that part never shows up so you just get these weird
midtone patches of ink.
It might not be readily apparent when you get a solarized image
like that, because these images still contain blacks, and the highlights
are also not affected. I guess in the parts of the images which are
either pure black or black enough, it prints just black, without mixing
fine line blacks with the midtones for the black details against gray
areas, so you might not suspect it could be a black cartridge or nozzle
fault since you are indeed seeing black areas in the prints.
Of course, most of you may have known this - but I didn't, so I'm
posting it in case anybody else could benefit. Also, this means that
Paul's curves may really have been OK for the UT inks on my 1280, if
only I have been able to get the black to print. Since I couldn't, it
doesn't't really matter to me now. I'm not trying the UT ebony anytime
soon again to figure that one out.
Thanks,
Ed

Bob, in haste I overlooked the port. I could not find the port you
described in Windows Explorer, but when I checked the ports for the 1270
using properties in settings/printer, there was a port I had overlooked
labeled "CB Monitor". It pointed to the address you reference. This is
getting a little weird, if I may say so. Still, though, despite everything
I cannot install the XP software for the 1270. I think (a) off into the
dreaded registry and (b) downloading the IP demo is a _big_ mistake.

Ken,
As you may have seen, I'm also having trouble with IP and my 2100. In all
the reading, rebooting, and reinstalling that I've done, I have read that IP
disables your existing Epson driver by various means to avoid conflict with
its own driver. When uninstalling it, using its own uninstaller since it
doesn't use the normal windows Uninstaller for some reason, it seems to
leave a new printer port that it sets up - called
C:\programfiles\iP\spool\printers\Epson 2200. You can delete this by going
to Settings/Printers/yourprinter(1270)/Properties/Ports and checking that
this new port is not there after uninstallation. If it is, delete it in that
menu, and recheck the box opposite your normal port for the 1270. IP's
uninstaller may also leave the printer installed; go to Settings/Printers
and manually delete it if necessary. On at least one occasions it said it
couldn't uninstall all the files, and I had to go to Program Files\IP and
delete the folders manually. I haven't yet looked to see what it might be
leaving in the Registry!

Perhaps they use more black and less color than, say, the 2200. They made a
similar change in the 2000P driver at one point, and it did indeed reduce
metamerism, at the expense of more grain.
What I'd like to know is if it does duotone prints. The 2200 doesn't.

What is the best set up etc? Can someone please give me the short point

I see alot here about the 1280. Is this because the 1280 is a better
printer for
B&W?
I am also seeing some info here regarding other Inks. What is this about
and
where can they be obtained?
Sorry about my ignorance but i am new to the digital age here and have never
been able to get the computer or printer settings write for good images.
Thus i just go back to the old method of the dark room.
Please, can some one help me here?

The 1280 dye inks certainly have deeper blacks than the 2200 Ultrachromes,
although the photo inks on non-matte paper are quite good.
As to 3rd party inks, you can get a CIS (continuous ink system) for either,
which is great for high volume printing, but I've only heard about high
quality 3rd party cartridge inks for the 1280 so far. Either way, if you
want to reserve a printer for B&W, you might want to consider quadtones or
hextones, or perhaps the Lyson narrow gamut inks, which are slightly colored
inks that let you vary the tone somewhat. I haven't tried them, though.
There are some other differences between the printers, like the fact that
the newer 2200 has a paper cutter and a FireWire interface, as well as
individual ink carts.
As to the output quality, I've found that the 2200 has some strong color
casts when I print B&W with color ink using the stock profiles. At first, I
had a really horrible brass color cast, which later cleared up, which makes
me suspect a driver bug. However, I also suspect that there are enough
unit-to-unit variations in either the printer (I hope) or the ink (I hope
not) that you really need to profile your own printer. That's not based on
having tried more than one printer, only on my belief that if the printers
and inks didn't vary, they'd be able to get the stock profiles closer.
Fortunately, I have profiling gear, and I've been able to get rid of my
color casts. I'm getting nice results now. For color stuff, I got gorgeous
results right out of the box.

Hi Teresa;
You got me curious there. I'm pc based, and there is no shortage of
web editors at all price ranges, but I couldn't think of any for
Mac, unless the Mac version of MS Office also includes FrontPage. So
I did a google search for shareware web sites and was absolutely
stunned at the results- out of some 200+ titles I skimmed, I came up
with only 3 that might help, and only one is specifically for Mac.
One is cross-platform browser based, and the third is Unix, which
should work? you'll have to ask someone else about that. Anyway,
here they are:

Perhaps someone mac-based can offer more suggestions?

Subject: 1280 Ink Indicators - Nothing
I have QVM Ink carts in a 1280 under XP, and the ink level indicators
show nothing. I've heard of this problem, and a solution of
downloading new drivers. I tried, it does nothing. Does anyone know
of another possibility?
Many thanks,
Scott

My thoughts exactly. The cost of IP plus the 2200 goes a long way towards
the the cost of a 4000....

Now...if I could
just get my ancient 1270 back in action after whatever ImagePrint did to my
system.

Simply suggesting that Ken test with the 2200 rather than hopping in boots
On all up front...

Yes, but an Epson 220ml cart is $120 x 7 carts = a major investment !!
