Susan,
I don't have a D1X (I have a Canon D30) but suggest following the camera instructions to the letter (as it is brand new to you) for formating the cards.

This can make a difference. Check your camera for formating options and look at the camera menu for formating.

Good luck, (I also don't have a mac)

Just got my D1X (wow) and a couple of 256mb cards... I've formatted them in
the camera, but the Mac doesn't recognize them and wants to initialize...
what do I do... the Mac offers 2 options, one standard, one extended... any
one with experience here? I need to use these cards tomorrow!
Thanks in advance... I'm so glad you are all out there!

Re: new D1x (LuminousLandscape)

2001-10-07 by Mark Tucker

I would refer these camera/tech questions to Luminous
Landscape discussion board, Steves Digicams, Rob Galbraith's
site, and Dirk Halstead's site. They have tons of people who do
all this stuff every day. It shocks me how much good information
is on those boards.
