Bronzing with FSN MIS inks on 1280

Bronzing with FSN MIS inks on 1280

2003-10-23 by radonprojects

Hi! I just set up a MIS inkset for a 1280. I've had great sucess
with the color set i have used on another 1280, and thought that
the B&W set would be equally as nice, but so far i am getting
bronzing in the blacks on Epson premium glossy. I'll admit, i
have just started doing the researching to find out how to
properly set up printing, but the main reason i wanted to set up
this machine was i thought i could get deep blacks on glossy
paper like the 1280 color (i have a 2200 for matte stuff already).

I'm sure somewhere in the past there are posts here..i also read
the info on MIS's website from Paul Roark but they say they are
for Matte Papers, so i guess i'm asking for any advice or maybe
just some points in the right direction.

the ink is FSN-HEX-E, which is correct i believe.

any advice is greatly appriciated!!!!

I'm sorry, i meant John Woolf's workflow, not Paul Roark.

Hello Jen,

I don't think you will have much success using glossy paper with
those MIS or any other BW inkset, because the glossy surface seems to
prevent all the ink from going into the paper itself, leaving some
imbedded in or on the top glossy surface, and when held so the light
hits it from a side angle; looks more like a silver print than an
inkjet print. You can get deep blacks if you set your black point in
the image to 0 and your white point to about 250 so the specular
lights will be the brightest points in the image. One of the beauties
of matte paper is that you can hold it at any angle to the light and
see all the depths of the image without much regard to the light
source. Work with your image till it looks just right to you and then
apply the FSN62 curve George Woolf supplys to the MIS website in the
workflow page.

Your friend in photography,

Johnny Eades

Dear Johnny ,

thanks so much for you rreply! I guess i had just read soo much
about how you would never get a true B&W print without a
dedicated set of inks i didn't do the research into what kind of
papers work.

is this ink more like the ultrachrome stuff in the 2200?

I guess just using Matte seems a bit limited.

Anyway, i will do some more tests with stuff and see what i can
get.

thanks again!

jen

Jen,

The Ultra Tone B&W inkset is the only "quad"/B&W pigment inkset that is
RC/glossy paper compatible (when "Photo" black is used). The FS-N is only
for matte paper.
