All, Okay - so I'm finally going to do it - going to order a 1280 and start off with the UT inkset. I therefore have a few questions about exactly what I'll need, and what I should do. Now, I know that much of this has been mentioned at various points, but my composite understanding of the process is a bit unclear, and I'm a bit confused by all the options on the MIS website. So...sorry for the possibly annoying questions. Let me see if I got this straight: -is there an advantage (other than cost, presumably), to filling my own carts rather than buying the pre-filled ones? -do I need to run the Epson inks through the printer first to make sure everytyhing works? -when I switch to the UT inks, do I need to wait some time before actually printing? I read a reference to something like that, but am unsure. -Do I need to get the cleaning cartridges from MIS, or will simply putting in the UT carts and running the purge pattern for 5 or so prints be sufficient? The MIS page says just run the pattern, but some of you have mentioned using the clear fluid cleaning cartidges. Any other general tips and hints to help ensure a smooth setup? thanks, allan

Allan, >Okay - so I'm finally going to do it - going to order a >1280 and start off with the UT inkset. ... >-is there an advantage (other than cost, presumably), to filling my own >carts rather than buying the pre-filled ones? Probably not. In fact, to ease the transition into the new venture, starting with pre-loaded carts might make sense. >-do I need to run the Epson inks through the printer first to >make sure everytyhing works? I'm not sure there is a 100% answer to this one. I once heard that the substance Epson puts in the new heads to preserve them on the shelf is best removed with their own inks. On the other hand, I'd rinse the dyes off the parking pads if the OEM inks are used. >-when I switch to the UT inks, do I need to wait some time >before actually printing? The waiting time is usually only with carts you load yourself, not the pre-filled ones. Bottom-loaded carts can get air bubbles in them that will often cause problems, but they tend to float up and out of the way if the printer is let sit overnight. Frankly, I fill, insert and print immediately. Sometimes I need a cleaning cycle, but often not. >-Do I need to get the cleaning cartridges from MIS, ... MIS doesn't think there is enough dye in the desktop printer heads to cause any problems. I never bother with the flushing fluids. >Any other general tips and hints to help ensure a smooth setup? Dive in and have fun. The settings and workflow are critical, so be sure to follow it carefully. Enjoy. Paul http://www.PaulRoark.com

Allan, Weighing the options of running the dyes through first in my virgin 1280 or starting with the final inkset was a big question. Most of the 1280's are pretty robust machines direct from manufacture, as well as calibrated so I just primed the machine with piezotones. I could not be happier with the results as well as not having to clean the dyes out of the machine before loading the quadtones. I have not had one clog or issue with this printer over the last 4 months.
