Mike,

Liked your site - was muttering to myself about how long it took to
load. Once done, the trade-off was to have everything all loaded for
instant access. It's a judgment call I guess. Impatient people like me
want to see something quickly to know if investing time waiting is going to
be worth it. A compromise might be to have a cover page with a couple pics
before the enter page. But it was worth it and I'm a better man for waiting
it out.
I like the motion abstractions a lot. They describe the subject in a
satisfying way evoking the experience of being there. I think your prices
look fair. How did you arrive at the number of prints? Do you think doing
a boxed portfolio is worth your while?

Alan,
Thanks for your feedback. Do you connect to the internet through a 56k
modem or through cable or dsl? I have a cable connection. The preloading
through my computer takes about 4 seconds. It's always interesting to see
how others perceive the site, because of the many variables including
internet connection, monitor size and cpu speed.

The number of prints per edition came thru talking w/other photographers and
looking at other websites. Price also figured into the decision. Offering
a boxed set of prints is a good idea. I hadn't considered that, but I will
now.

Thanks again for your thoughts and feedback.

Best regards,
Mike Kless

Mike,

I am a slow-poke 56K user.

I have a friend who has made a good living selling portfolios. He has
custom-made cases with embossed titles made. He is well-known for his
writing and workshops which gives him a great marketing advantage. It
seems to me that your rodeo and auto work would have a good niche advantage
with collectors.

Mike,

I also enjoyed your images on the website. But I have to agree the
load time is excessive. With my DSL it took about 30 seconds during
which there's a black screen. I don't think you get anyone with a
telephone connection to see your work.

Developing with a fast system makes it hard to see what others will
see. I started my website back when I had a 33k modem so speed
was of utmost importance. Now it could probably stand some
spiffing up though.

Nice images though.

Re: [Digital BW] website

Mike

Great images!! I also agree about the load time and I use DSL here in the
UK. I don¹t know anything about web page development but is there a way to
have the site load in two (or more) parts? Even for us broadband users if
the opening image were to appear immediately while, say, the first 50%
loaded it would at least help with people¹s patience. Once the first 50%
has been loaded ³Enter² could appear, clicking on which could start the next
50% (or the other 50% could continue loading in the background). I would
also change the opening image to something that better whets the appetite to
hang in there. Doesn¹t help with the narrowband viewers but I do think for
the broadband people what you have done is great once they get there.
Perhaps the initial page could act as a gateway for narrowband or broadband
users the narrowband getting a significantly more straightforward (and I
guess, boring) site.

Cheers

Steve

Hi Alan,

Figured...since you are close to Ann Arbor and Howard does workshops, writings and
produces portfolios for sale...it was an easy guess.

I attended his Zone System workshop in 1995 - was a wonderful experience. He is a
real generous teacher and excellent photographer - one of my favorites. I have two of
is prints hanging right now.

Best,

John

Beautiful work Alex. I'm a fairly recent Exactol Lux convert myself.
So far have not found any film that does not seem to develop really
nicely with it, especially for scanning. Perhaps some not as stained
as others (Like Fuji Acros) but still gives a good neg nonetheless.

What do you plan to do now that Barry is gone and our supply of
Exactol Lux may be gone too? I hear his wife is considering ways to
keep his "shop" going but not sure how just yet.

Re: [Digital BW] website

Hi Richard,

Thanks.

I have devoted much of the past three years towards really trying to
learn how to take more than snapshots. After 30+ years of dabbling in
the hobby, I think am finally making headway - at least in that I
actually Like what I am doing.

I have emails from Barry just over a month old; I was quite shocked to
hear about his death. He provided me some excellent assistance. I have
an unopened set of developer and fixer to keep me supplied for a few
months, but I surely hope the shop will reopen. There are so many
variables to juggle, I'd surely prefer to stay with something that is
working and focus on the techniques of photo acquisition rather than
processing. I guess it is not that difficult to change, but the
Exactol Lux has been perfoming fine.

Alex

The error means that the SITE has sent out all the bits it is allowed to for

Now that Barry Thornton has passed into B&W heaven, do you know what is

Hi all,

There has been a couple of updates on Barry's website recently.
First annoucement was that the shop was closed.
That was quickly updated into "the shop is closed...for the moment"
Latest version is

"Although his memory will go on for many years, the shop is now closed .... for the moment...
If you have questions about the shop please contact me at andy@...
It is hoped that the shop will re-open and have all the items as listed before - but please be patient for Barry's family as they have time to reflect on the man they loved so much"

Kate Thornton also posted a message on photo.net : http://www.photo.net/bboard/q-and-a-fetch-msg?msg_id=006LwW

Just a quick word to say that Barry was my major drive/inspiration to get back into BW, I surely do miss him.

Now that Barry Thornton has passed into B&W heaven, do you know what is
  happening to his supply business.

I have plain old dial-up and the site loaded just fine! With both the
temporary and the "real" URL.
