Epson 4000 and QTR

Epson 4000 and QTR

2003-12-04 by thecat6955082

I have purchased a 4000 and hope to get in in January from
Inkjetart. Meanwhile, I'm trying to get my ducks in line. I
currenty have a XP system but am thinking of adding a dual boot
Linux system so I can use Roy Harrington's QTR. With 8 ink channels
(7 plus 1 spare)including Photo Black, Matt Black and Light Black it
appears ideal for use as both a color and BW (using the spare channel
as another black shade. I am assuming that Roy will support the 4000
in the near future (I hope).

Have got a bunch of questions:
     1. Which is the best Linux distrubution?
     2. Will there be a Linux gimp print driver for the 4000?
     3. Can I upgrade XP Photoshop 7 to Linux Photoshop CS or do I
have to buy a new Linus PS?
     4. Does what I'm thinking make sense to for a dual BW/color
workflow?
     5. What problems can I anticipate?

By the way I have about 50 years darkroom experience and 40 years
with computer so I think I can handle a reasonable challange but do
not want to spend a lot of time to get a working system debugged so
if this approach does not make sense I would like to know.

Thanks

I have purchased a 4000 and hope to get in in January from
Inkjetart. Meanwhile, I'm trying to get my ducks in line. I
currenty have a XP system but am thinking of adding a dual boot
Linux system so I can use Roy Harrington's QTR. With 8 ink channels

as another black shade. I am assuming that Roy will support the 4000
in the near future (I hope).

Have got a bunch of questions:
       1. Which is the best Linux distrubution?

So far as QTR2 is concerned the only disto that I have had trouble with is
Mandrake. RedHat is straight forward but is a bit in limbo at the present
time unless you want to cough up the bucks for the commercial (enterprise)
version. I have used SuSE with no real problems and others have used
variations based on Debian such as Gentoo.

       2. Will there be a Linux gimp print driver for the 4000?

I would suspect that it make take some time before a gomp-print driver is
available for the 4000 but just how long is problematic. What will be needed
is a QTR driver for the 4000 and that is separate and distinct from the
gimp-print drivers that come with a Linux distro.

       3. Can I upgrade XP Photoshop 7 to Linux Photoshop CS or do I
have to buy a new Linus PS?

So far as I know there is no Linux version of Photoshop and I don't think
the windows version will work under one of the emulators such as wine. The
Gimp has many of Photoshop's features but is not yet in the same league as a
photo editor.

       4. Does what I'm thinking make sense to for a dual BW/color
  workflow?

I do my editing in Photoshop on a windows machine, store the image in a
shared file and print from Linux using QTR. I have Linux in a separate box
that is on my home LAN. Sounds much worse than it really is.

       5. What problems can I anticipate?

If you are not a Unix or Linux buff there will be a learning curve but it
isn't particularly formidable. My WAG is that the major problem is going to
be how long it takes for Roy to produce a QTR PPD for the 4000. I am
interested in the 4000 but have shied away until more is known about it and
until the needed support has emerged.

I would bet that the commercial rip vendors will have support for the 4000
fairly early on but at a price.

By the way I have about 50 years darkroom experience and 40 years
with computer so I think I can handle a reasonable challange but do
not want to spend a lot of time to get a working system debugged so
if this approach does not make sense I would like to know.

You can also consider buying something like Microsoft Virtual PC or
VMware which will create a virtual computer on your desktop on which you
can install Linux. The virtual PC will behave just like any other
computer on the network.

I have a setup like that with VMWare and can print directly to QTR2 from
Photoshop in Windows.

I have a similar setup to you, the difference is that I do not
currently have a linux machine but a Mac running OSX.
Have you, or anybody else found a way to print directly to QTR (via
Gimprint) rather than saving the output from PS in windows to a
shared file and them having to work on a second machine to output
via QTR?
I have a second question which is, does QTR support printing to a
ethernet connected printer? I have a small home network with several
machines and would like to install my 2200 and 3000 as networked
printers.
Last, but not least does anyone know anything about printing to a
2200 via bluetooth, I have done a search on Epsons site and drawn a
blank so far.
Thanks in advance.

The gimp-print plugin seems to have its own set of PPDs and I'll be
jiggered if I can figure out how to add the QTR set to them. I don't
believe that I have seen any posting from anyone that has successfully
printed directly with a QTR PPD from The Gimp.

I have a label printer and a fax all in one on a ethernet print server
but I have not been able to print to it from the linux box. It sees it
but somewhere there is a hang up. I think I recall someone with a Mac
complaining of the same thing.

Can't help you with BlueTooth since I don't use it.

I think I misread the first part of your question. If what you mean is
has anyone been able to print directly to QTR (either in a Linux box or
a mac) from windows. I myself have not been able to do so. I think
Daniel Staver has a set up where he can. I have tried many different
samba setups and though the wintel machine finds the printer it will not
load the driver from linux so that you could print directly. Whether I
am simply not with it enough to figure out the set up or whether there
is a communication problem between win xp and Linux I don't know.

Re: [Digital BW] Epson 4000 and QTR

2003-12-05 by Roy Harrington

I see the Epson 4000 discussions have started. This printer
being an 8 ink printer has some new issues in general and for
QTR in particular. Being gimp-print based for now, it's quite
dependent on what's in gimp-print. As Roger has mentioned new
PPD files would be needed. This is probably easy compared to
dealing with the internals that are 7 ink oriented for the most part.
One stop gap method would be to define "two" printers one a
photo ink printer and the other a matte ink printer. From the
Epson literature it seems they are supporting only one of the
blacks at a time.

So far I haven't seen a Programmers Guide for the new printer.
I don't expect any major issues but the nitty-gritty details would
be necessary to get things working.

As far as different interfaces to printers are concerned, the issue
is mainly a CUPS capability. I believe ethernet connections work but
have never tried it. I don't think Firewire and Bluetooth are
possible yet and haven't any idea if they are coming.

If it's any consolation, I've got one of these 4000's on order as well.
