MIS VM Color Spaces & Monitor Calibration

Paul's workflow for my 1160 indicates I should work in the sRGB color space, but what about the Grayscale color space? Should I create a custom gray space for WYSIWYG like recommended for Piezography? If I do that, I have the problem of compatibility between systems/drivers. I have a lot of images made for printing in Piezography in a custom greyspace. Since I'm now working with two quadtone printers and ink systems, and since I will probably be changing inks and systems over the years, maybe it would be best to just settle on a standard greyspace and then use correction curves for each system. If a standard space is the answer, what should it be? And how should the monitor be calibrated? Jon Cone is adamant that the space should be gamma 1.8 and that the monitor should be calibrated to gamma 1.8. I find that way too flat compared to my prints. What's everyone else doing?
