2200 ink/software combinations

2200 ink/software combinations

2003-12-08 by houston.spencer@alcatel.com.cn

I'm trying to create an approach to b&w on my 2200 that is as
uncomplicated as possible without sacrificing quality. The unaided 2200
running OEM inks isn't cutting it.

Since I'm running a windows machine and don't want to boot Unix, I
understand that these are my options:

BO printing
Image Print (or other) RIP
Septone system

Is this right? With all the reading I've done, I can't seem to find a
workflow available for the unaided 2200 and UTs.

Is anyone using another approach with the 2200 and getting great results?

Thanks. --h

If your problem with the 2200 OEM inks is color casts, one more possibility
would be to get a custom profile made. It may very well come out better than
the stock profile. If the problem is metamerism, then that won't help.

Spencer,

There are RGB curves for the UT's and 2100/2200 printer. Look in this folder
on the groups homepage:

Files > Ink Sets > MIS > MIS Ultra Tone Inks

For EEM but would give you a starting point and I am sure that Paul will
come up with more.

Inkjetmall has promised Piezo 2 software and inks for the 2200 in the near
future. Unfortunately their product releases seem to get delayed.

I have seen some really impressive prints done with the OEM inks and
ImagePrint on matte papers.

Hello Houston,
Your query peaked my interest because I experimented with the latest 2200
driver (5.4a) from Epson yesterday and found that it is unacceptable for
printing B&W prints. It causes the prints to come out with a terrible light
cyan colour cast. I tried all permutations of the choices with this driver
only to uninstall it and go back to Version 5.31 which makes some very
acceptable B&W prints on Epson Enhanced Matte paper with Epson Matte Black
ink using Carl Schofield's method from the Luminous Landscape site.
In the 5.4 software version, I could not choose "Photo-realistic" mode and
this is the key to Schofield's workflow? The choice just isn't there. In
5.31 it is there and works fine. Thinking I'd pooched the download, and a
glutton for punishment, I re-downloaded, only to get the same results. I
won't go into how I also didn't like what the 5.4 version did to my colour
prints. Suffice it to say that the colours got really 'Technicolor and not
what I expected.
All in all the 5.31 software works very well for me so I'll keep it
installed. Just an experience worth noting. I am cross posting to the Epson
2000 list since it is where most 2200 issues are raised.
Sincerely,
Owen
