Unsupported printer

2003-12-09 by linsch2

Dear Group,

I've learned a great deal from reading the posts here--I only wish I
had discovered you before I bought a printer. As it is, I have an
Epson 960, a nice little printer, but it seems to be largely
unsupported by MIS, and I would like to use the Eboni Black ink.

From what I understand about my printer, it was meant to replace the
890. It has the inks of the 1280 family, but in individual carts
similar--if not exactly the same as (except for the chip?)--to the
2200. (Similar carts but not the Ultrachrome ink.) The 960 has two
black positions, but they both have the same black, not two different
as in the 2200. My question is this: If I could fill virgin empties
(960 carts are available from MIS) with Eboni, could I run my 960,
using the Black/Only method, without changing the color carts?

B/O seems like it would be a good choice for me right now. I'm still
trying to learn a lot, including Photoshop. I've always liked the
look of Tri-X, and the 960 has a droplet size of only 2 picoliters
which makes it seem (to me, but I know nothing about this) ideally
suited for B/O.

I understand that the internal structure of the 2200 cart is very
complex. Does that make them more difficult than usual to fill?

Any suggestions you could give me would be greatly appreciated.
Perhaps there is another way to go about this that I haven't thought
of? I must say, I have been very impressed with the general level of
intelligence, expertise, and generosity shown by the members of this
group.

Many,many thanks,

Linda

If the driver has a Black Only choice then you should be able to do
it, with any black ink.

I'm real curious to see a BO print from a 2pl printer. Have you tried
it with the ink that came with it? Would you be interested in doing a
print swap? If so, please contact me off line at cj@...

Clayton

Linda

I would suggest that you try a B/O print with the inks you have. I have a
2100 at home, but use a 950 (the European 960 equivalent) at work ( I teach
photography at a college). I have found that the 950 produces much more
neutral B/W prints than the 2100, with the inks supplied.

You might find that the B/O prints are fine for your needs. Just use a
Matte paper (I use the Epson Matte Archival) and select Black Only. Use the
2880dpi setting/uncheck high speed, and your off.

Best of luck.

Martin
