New Inks

New Inks

2003-12-20 by Paul Roark

MIS has put the C82 "Easy B&W" as well as the UT-2 inks on its web page.
See the "News/What's New" tab on the www.InkSupply.com
<http://www.inksupply.com/> page.

The FS-N inks are not ready to go. I think MIS is off on vacation and will
not get to those until January.

Paul,

Do you think that the UT-2 cartridges would produce good results on
the 1270?

Evan,

I don't know how the UT-2 inks would look on the 1270. I think the machine
is technically good enough. I find that 1440 High Speed off is fine for
even the most radical of the sepia curves.

Of course, the only curves I've written are for the 1280. However, the
curves for this inkset are easier to make and modify because it relies on
the Epson driver for the main cross-overs.

Hi Paul,

I went to the MIS site after reading your post. I see that in
addition to the UT-2 for the 1280 and C82 printers, they also mention
that they consider the VM series as already replaced by the UT
inkset, and the FS/FSN's will be phased out as soon as their UT based
replacements are ready.

I understand the nature of your relationship with MIS, but thought
I'd ask a couple of questions:

1. How long do you think it will be before the old FS/FSN inks become
unavailable? If we have tuned workflows based on the old formula's
characteristics, can we expect some adjustments will be required to
adopt the new UT/FS-N's?

2. Since MIS is moving so much of their product line to the UT
formulation, do you think any of the original inksets will remain
available in their product lineup? I realize that may not be an
appropriate question to ask of you, but even "qualified speculation"
would be most welcome ;>)

My own workflows are both curve and RIP based, depending on the
printer/inkset combination. You've been incredibly generous in
supporting the curve-based workflows, so it is only adapting my wide-
format RIPs to the UT formulations that I'm really concerned with.

Thanks for any information you feel comfortable sharing, Paul.
I would direct these questions to Bob at MIS, but they're closed
until after the New Year and I was planning on making some system and
inkset changes in my print room during that time. Now I'm not sure I
should proceed based on their latest announcement...

Regards,
Richard

MIS will keep "legacy" inks available, but de-emphasize them. They just
can't service all the SKUs that would result if all the old products were
available forever.

>1. How long do you think it will be before the old FS/FSN inks become

I don't know, but I'd expect bulk sales will continue for some time.
CIS/CFS owners should probably replace the carts yearly anyway. The sponges
ultimately break down.

>If we have tuned workflows based on the old formula's

Yes. No 2 inkset absorb quite the same. However, my experience with the
UT-FSN is that it is fairly compatible with past drivers and workflows.

>Since MIS is moving so much of their product line to the UT

I have recommended a "legacy" category. One problem is the confusion of new
customers. So, the first list of inks a customer gets to must not be too
long & confusing. We want the "Easy B&W" category to take as much or the
new/novice business as possible.

Of course, one big purpose of the "Easy B&W" inksets is to reduce support
costs. The curves are too complex for many casual users.

I also have another agenda. The UT ink family is so much better that I want
the old inks off the market. I think the warming of the older inks gives
the entire field a bad reputation. Even carbon warms bit, but it's much
less. The general reputation of the medium affects what we all can get for
our prints. I want this medium to be accepted as an "archival" medium that
can command high prices.

Also, the RC/barrier paper compatibility of the UT family is important. The
"fine art" folks may prefer cotton under glass, but the mass market wants a
more "photographic" look. I think that is going to require RC papers --
which if Wilhelm is to be believed, can be quite archival (a real concern of
mine).

So, it's time to move the field to the newer inks, even if it requires a
little pushing.

Yes I see your point. This is the choice of inkset
MIS's customers will soon have:

The Original MIS Quadtones
MIS Full Spectrum Quadtones
MIS Variable Mix Quadtones
Custom Tinting for Quadtone Inks
Ultra-Tone B&W Inks
Ultra-Tone 2 B&W Inks
Easy B&W Inks

And this is only for the b&w inksets. Enough to
confuse even the long time customers. Pity the new ones!
But the list also shows the tremendous advances in ink
technology of the past 3-4 years years!
Cheers,
Andre

I think what I am ultimately looking forward to is the UT MIS Full
Spectrum Neutral Quadtones. Will you be developing workflows for RC
Papers with an over coat of PremierArt and this ink set Paul?

I just tried some Premium Semigloss with the 1160, UT-FSN, MIS Photo K,
Piezo driver and EAM paper setting. It did very well -- smooth with a dmax
of 2.0.

The RGB curves I have look like they will need some modifications. I don't
want to make any promises as to when, if ever, I'll get around to making
such.
