[Digital BW] Red Hat 9 and QTR install problem

[Digital BW] Red Hat 9 and QTR install problem

2003-12-24 by Barry Kelsall

After installing Red Hat 9 & Gnome from a box set of CDs, including RPMs for
CUPS and Ghostscript, I received the following errors trying to install QTR
from the usr/share/QuadToneRIP2-beta directory:

[root@localhost QuadToneRIP2-beta]# sh make-quadtonerip
cc -g -O -c -o qline.o qline.c
make: cc: Command not found
make: *** [qline.o] Error 127
cc -g -O -I. -DQUADPATH=\"`cups-config --datadir`\" -c -o quadraster.o
quadraster.c
/bin/sh: line 1: cups-config: command not found
/bin/sh: line 1: cc: command not found
make: *** [quadraster.o] Error 127
[root@localhost QuadToneRIP2-beta]#

I am a Linux neophyte am can only guess that some of the system files are
not living where the make-quadtonerip script expects them to be. I viewed
the script thinking I could edit it, but it made no sense to me. I looked at
Linux many years ago & am impressed with the strides they have made, but
installing software is still a nightmare...

thanks in advance,
BK

You're not just installing, you're building it. What is missing is the
C compiler (cc). You have not installed the development packages. The
script is trying to build cups-config but it can't.

Thank you Gus O Great Linux Master!

I installed some more RPM packages & this time the QTR installation hummed
along until:

/usr/bin/ld: cannot find -lcups
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status
make: *** [rastertoprinter-quad] Error 1

I am clueless.. Do I need to remove Red Hat CUPS & download the latest code
from cups.org?

Hi Gus,

You are missing a file. You need cups-config in order to install QTR.

Sign onto the red hat network. goto software. Select redhat 9. enter
cups-devel into the search box and click on the search button. When the
search is complete scroll down and click on cups-devel-1.1.17-13.3.03:1
When that screen comes up scroll down to the bottom of the creen and
click on the rpm file to download it. Once it downloads go to the
directory it is in, if you are signed on as root it will be in /root
enter rpm-Uvh cups-devel, press the tab key to fill in the file name and
then press enter. cups-devel will install and part of that package will
be cups-config. Reinstall QTR.

Typo in the rpm command. it is rpm -Uvh .... The space between rpm and
-Uvh is necessary.

RE: [Digital BW] Red Hat 9 and QTR install problem

2003-12-28 by Roger L Sopher

Hi Matt,

I got QTR running under both Fedora and SuSE 9.0. Both have a few strange
quirks and the installation is a little different from Red Hat. The easiest
way, I think, to get it going under Fedora is to first install Red Hat,
install QTR then upgrade the installation with fedora. SuSE and my Linux box
aren't terribly happy with each other but with a sufficient amount of
swearing and grumbling it can be made to work. It's a pity that Red Hat has
bailed out of the "ordinary" user base since that installation is super
smooth and easy. I am going to try a couple of other distros to see if there
is a better answer.

Re: [Digital BW] Red Hat 9 and QTR install problem

2003-12-28 by Barry Kelsall

Thanks for all the help so far, but...

I d/l & installed cups-devel, & the two scripts to set up QTR worked
without any errors this time, but when I tried to set up the printer
with WebMin, there were no drivers listed for the CUPS driver, only a
single numeral "1" (one), and also there were no options listed
(Dither Algorithms, Image Type, etc. were not there).

I'm wondering if I need to reformat & start over with Linux (ugh)
because I have not had any success in running Red Hat Network either.
I can't register my hardware or RPMs for updating, & keep getting
silly error messages when I try. Yes, I installed the Security
Certificate update. They (Red Hat) are making Microsoft look like the
good guys...

Which distribution of Linux are you using? Which version of WebMin? The
newest one had a problem with the printer module and needs to have it
updated. You can do that from WebMin in the webmin administration module.

I'm wondering if I need to reformat & start over with Linux (ugh)
because I have not had any success in running Red Hat Network either.

If you are using the boxed set of Red Hat 9 there is a problem in getting
into the network because they changed their security setup. You can get the
updates to up2date from any of the red hat mirror sites or if you send me
your email address I will send them to you as an attachment. Once you
install those two updates you should be able to register your system and get
into rhn.redhat.com without any problem.

I agree Red Hat has become a pain in the tuchus since they decided to go
exclusively "big time." I am looking at other distros to see if any that are
reasonably user friendly to the non Linux buff would be a good home for QTR.
SuSE looks promising but my Linux box and SuSE have some incompatibilities
that make loading it a bit tricky. I am going to try one of the debian
versions over the next few weeks to see if they do any better.

Re: [Digital BW] Red Hat 9 and QTR install problem

Thanks for all the help so far, but...

I d/l & installed cups-devel, & the two scripts to set up QTR worked
without any errors this time, but when I tried to set up the printer
with WebMin, there were no drivers listed for the CUPS driver, only a
single numeral "1" (one), and also there were no options listed
(Dither Algorithms, Image Type, etc. were not there).

Which distribution of Linux are you using? Which version of WebMin? The
newest one had a problem with the printer module and needs to have it
updated. You can do that from WebMin in the webmin administration module.

************

I'm using the boxed RH9; I d/l WebMin 1.121. After reading your kind email I
updated the printer module to ver. 1.124 but the problem remains - all I see
is a numeral "1" & no options listed etc. for CUPS.

************

I'm wondering if I need to reformat & start over with Linux (ugh)
because I have not had any success in running Red Hat Network either.
I can't register my hardware or RPMs for updating, & keep getting
silly error messages when I try. Yes, I installed the Security
Certificate update. They (Red Hat) are making Microsoft look like the
  good guys...

************

I already updated the two security files & my system is registered on RHN
but I can't send my hardware or RPM info; I get a "Problem sending hardware
profile" (or similar) message & when I click OK the window inviting me to
register the system is still there & if I try again I get the same error,
but now (unknown to me at first) I have a 2nd system registered on RHN with
the same name. I tried unchecking the hardware profile & then I received
"Problem sending RPM profile". I had 5 duplicate systems listed on the Red
Hat Network website before I figured out what was happening. So I deleted
them all & tried again with the same result... ouch

************

I agree Red Hat has become a pain in the tuchus since they decided to go
exclusively "big time." I am looking at other distros to see if any that are
reasonably user friendly to the non Linux buff would be a good home for QTR.
SuSE looks promising but my Linux box and SuSE have some incompatibilities
that make loading it a bit tricky. I am going to try one of the debian
versions over the next few weeks to see if they do any better.

************

Thanks for all your efforts Roger. I am feeling pretty frustrated and don't
know that I want to invest more time trying SuSE or any other Linux distros
for that matter. The irony in all this is that I am the "computer guy" at
the small company I work for, doing all the routine network admin (with an
ancient NT 3.51 server - HA!) and desktop support in addition to the
graphics work. They think I am some kind of miracle-worker who knows
everything but Linux reveals the truth - I know next to nothing!

Barry, it sounds to me like a clean reinstall of red hat is in order. I have
the older version of webmin that does work with red hat 9. I'll put it on a
ftp site for you and you can download it from there.

I'm surprised that red hat has been such a problem since it was the easiest
installation of the distros I have tried, but that is on my Linux box. I
have come to the conclusion that Linux is far from a finished product and
individual idiosyncrasies of systems are real. On the other hand I can
remember going through multiple reinstalls with Win 98 and WinME before it
would take.

The results are worth the pain.

Thank you very much, Roger. I did d/l WebMin from the ftp site. I'll get
around to replacing my installed copy of WebMin in the next few days, but at
the moment my plate is full. I'm going to try to salvage this RH9 install,
because really the only thing I care about is getting QTR running. Maybe it
is the cheap hardware in my Linux box, though the system has been pretty
stable so far (I got a cheap AMD/ECS Mb combo & 256 MB RAM at Fry's &
finished the system with leftover parts). After some degree of wrestling I
got SAMBA to work, & I have a keyboard/mouse/video switch to share with my
P4 Win2K box. So I feel I am pretty close...

I do have another HD lying around, so I may still try another clean install
on it as you suggest.

Again, thanks for your help!
