Learning Phase

Learning Phase

2004-01-10 by Joe Dempsey

I am new to this board and have been monitoring (with great
interest) the continuing exhange of opinion and fact regarding
digital BW output. It is of particular interest since I have had a
number of requests for my images in BW. Generally, I shoot with a
Nikon D100, (NEF Raw), correct color to my liking and convert to bw
by either selecting the most favorable RGB channel or more often go
from the lightness channel in LAB color and then saving to
grayscale. I am achieving satisfactory results on the screen, but
the RGB output, for the most part does have a color cast of some
sort. My editing software is PS/CS. My printer is an EPSON 2200.
I went to the MIS site to see about the much-heralded Eboni, but in
my on inimitable manner failed to click the correct link. For those
of you who have graciously stuck with me to this point, my questions
are:
1. Is BO output from the black cartridge only ... or do you put
black cartridges in all the slots?

2. What is the simplest way to start the experimental output
(shortest learning curve) ... and then graduate to curves,
workflows, etc.?

Thanks for your patience from down here in LA (Lower Arkansas).

Kindest regards,
Joe

When you select black ink for printing via the epson driver the 2200
will use only the black ink cartridge. You can put Epson Matte Black
(MK), Epson Photo Black (PK), or MIS Eboni K in the black ink cartridge
slot. Do not attempt to load these black ink carts in any of the other
cartridge slots. Each cartridge has a chip that is specific to a
particular cartridge position and it will not work in other positions
(unless you switch the chips). Also, be aware that MIS sells Eboni in
two different cartridges for the 2200 and they are labeled as follows:
ARC-T0348-K MIS EBONI BLACK (use this in the black cartridge position
for BO printing and with the color inks for full color printing)
ARC-T0347-QUT MIS Ultratone Lt. Black (this is Eboni black in a
cartridge that goes in the light black position and can only be used as
part of the full Ultratone inkset for printing grayscale via QTR or
IJC/OPM)

Hello Joe,

Carl covered this one.

>2. What is the simplest way to start the experimental output

IMO, BO is the simplest, easiest, and least expensive way to get
started, and it doesn't lock you in to other systems or ink sets.
You are always free to try other things any time you want. It also
has the advantage of being able to print BW and color from the same
printer.

Please see my web site (link below) for details on BO printing.

Clayton
