Re: [Digital BW] Learning Phase

I'm a new subscriber to this list as well and must say, as a reader for
the past 2 weeks I've learned A LOT in such a short period. Thanks to
everyone who so freely shares and discusses this wonderful technology.

Joe, my reading and experience shows that BO printing on the 2200 pulls
from the black cartridge only BUT I do notice my light magenta goes down
significantly when I print BO. Some articles indicate this is due to
head cleaning cycles but I find it goes down faster than any of the
other colors so I have to think it may actually be being pulled? I don't
know for certain and can only guess but it seems to me that ink is going
somewhere! I've not pulled out a loupe to look closely so maybe someone
with more knowlege can address this.

As for shortest learning curves, I've found that picking an image with a
full range of tones (for me this is portraits since that's what I
specialize in) and printing that same image over and over with different
settings while keeping notes on the actual printed sheet about what I
did has been most helpful. These I then file away and come back to later
for reference. I've used matte paper for some of these tests, Epson
lustre finish and Ilford's pearl finish. Keeping notes seems to be the
best way for me to learn and keep it all straight.

I've not tried the Eboni ink but I'm tempted more and more to give it a
try. I'm also looking at the Septone ink set. So many
choices..................so little fundage!

Subject: [Digital BW] Learning Phase

I am new to this board and have been monitoring (with great
interest) the continuing exhange of opinion and fact regarding
digital BW output. It is of particular interest since I have had a
number of requests for my images in BW. Generally, I shoot with a
Nikon D100, (NEF Raw), correct color to my liking and convert to bw
by either selecting the most favorable RGB channel or more often go
from the lightness channel in LAB color and then saving to
grayscale. I am achieving satisfactory results on the screen, but
the RGB output, for the most part does have a color cast of some
sort. My editing software is PS/CS. My printer is an EPSON 2200.
I went to the MIS site to see about the much-heralded Eboni, but in
my on inimitable manner failed to click the correct link. For those
of you who have graciously stuck with me to this point, my questions
are:
1. Is BO output from the black cartridge only ... or do you put
black cartridges in all the slots?

2. What is the simplest way to start the experimental output
(shortest learning curve) ... and then graduate to curves,
workflows, etc.?

Thanks for your patience from down here in LA (Lower Arkansas).

Kindest regards,
Joe

Lea: If I understand correctly, the 2200, responding to a grayscale image
prints primarily from the two black cartridges ( and maybe light magenta )?

If you print in color mode, it uses all colors to create the grayscale. If
you print in black only mode, it appears to use only black, not gray. I've
looked with a loupe, and I couldn't find any colored dots, although if there
were only a few widely scattered ones, I suppose it's possible that I missed
them.
