1160 head won't come clean

1160 head won't come clean

2004-01-13 by Allen Birnbach

I have an Epson 1160 that I used just a half dozen times, then stored
for a couple of years with cartridges in it. Now I'm trying to get it
back on line. I ran Epson cleaning cartridges for quite a few cycles,
and tried Fantastik on paper towels in the track.

At this point, the nozzle check has three missing lines in the black
bars, one fuzzy line in the black bars, two lines missing in the
magenta and one in the blue. Multiple cleaning cycles (and then
leaving the unit alone overnight) over the last four days have
resulted in some improvement, but there doesn't seem to be any
improvement any more.

Any other suggestions? I hate to dump this machine when it is
virtually new, but....

I have the Epson 1280 printer. This may not be the case with the 1160.

Using the Cleaning utility in the Epson driver, you can run more than 3
consecutive cleaning / nozzle check cycles without causing harm to the
printer.

I had a single black bar in my black nozzle that would not come clean.
Finally I called Epson tech support, expecting to mail the thing in for
repair.

Instead, the technician had me run 5 consecutive cleaning/nozzle check
cycles, and on the 5th one the clog broke free.

The technician told me that if you run consecutive cleaning/nozzle
checks using the cleaning utility in the driver, each successive
cleaning cycle uses a bit more ink and a bit more pressure. I did not
ask what the "limit" was on running the cleaning cycles, but I didn't
get the impression that we were going to stop at number 5.

I got the clog using MIS Ultra Tone inks, and did my cleaning cycles
with Epson OEM ink.

Good Luck,

Mike

Alas, I probably did 20 cycles with the Epson cleaning carts, and
probably 30 cycles with Epson EOM inks over four days. No luck.
Unless I get some other suggestions, I'm afraid I'm looking at another
printer.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
