Dear Helene.
Here's a simple method.
Create a new layer, select the graduation tool and on the gradient
option pull down menu, select foreground to transparent, making sure
the foreground is selected as white. Now, run the graduation tool/
line from the top of the image down. This will give you a two
dimensional fog from foreground to rear. If you are fogging a
landscape, for example and you have trees, use the erasor with a bit
of opacity to selectively clear the image on those details to
similate distance in the fog. Works really well.
