2200+Quadtone+Ultratone

2200+Quadtone+Ultratone

2004-01-21 by george_w_barr

I have just purchased MIS ultratone inks and converted my 2200. I
have run some test 21 step wedge prints and some images. I noticed
the grain was barely visible in the step wedge print and in the
really light even tones in the image print, the dots are readily
visible and in fact are about .5 mm. apart. As near as I can tell
they are all black and no greys. I tried setting up the printer to
do sepia only and it came out the same warm black colour, slightly
lighter though than the previous print which was supposed to be warm
black. Clearly there is no sepia on this print at all. Nozzles are
fine. It's as if somehow it is printing black only instead of colour
(shades). I followed the quadtone and 2200 help files exactly. What
obvious step am I missing?

Thanks

George

George,

Are you using QuadtoneRIP (beta 9) on a Mac? Paper and profiles used?

Re: [Digital BW] 2200+Quadtone+Ultratone

Carl:

Iv'e made some progress since I wrote the appeal - Roy replied to me and said that
his site didn't have curves for ultratone inks, just ultrachrome so that was probably
the problem. I checked and he was right. I went to your .mac site and downloaded
both the .8 and .9 profiles and found in the .8 profile folder the ultratone folder.
Inside i found all the necessary curves for cool, neutral, warm and sepia.

Now things get interesting. In various attempts to move files around and try the
various applescripts and the linux programmes somehow I have the warm tone and
the calibration curves available and when I printed with the warmtone - lo I actually
got the warmtone image printed, no dots, hell it even matched the image on my
screen which was more than i was hoping for - I'm elated and want to thank both you
and Roy and all the others for the work done.

But, darned if I can figure out how to get the cool, neutral and sepia to come along
for the ride. In the curvedropbox are assorted files. There are files that end in txt,
files that end in no suffix and two with .quad behind them, not surprisingly the warm
tone and the calibration curve which were the only two to show up in the printer
dialog box.

So, to put me totally over the moon, tell me what I am doing wrong - how did I
manage to get two curves in there but not the rest. When I use the run/quad/profile
programme, it says the ink file is missing.

Thanks again, making progress.

George

Re: [Digital BW] 2200+Quadtone+Ultratone

George,

The only files you should have in your CurveDropBox folder are those
with a .quad extension. I think you may have moved the UT profile
descriptor files from their original folder (Profiles), which also
contains a toner-curve.raw file that must stay in the same folder with
the .txt profile descriptor files when you use run-quad-profile to load
them. The cool, neutral, and sepia profiles all use this
toner-curve.raw file and the reason they didn't load is probably
because the toner-curve.raw file couldn't be found.

absolutely right - all four now installed, printing proceeding without problem. Thanks
again.
