Epson 1270 with MIS VM ink - prints look muddy

Epson 1270 with MIS VM ink - prints look muddy

2004-02-26 by Bob Thornburg

I've installed the MIS continuous flow system with the VM inkset on
my Epson 1270 printer. The tone of the blacks is superb, but I lose
detail in the shadow areas. The prints come out looking muddy. I've
tried using Epson matte paper, and Epson watercolor paper, and used
the PQIJ option in the print driver. Does anyone have any ideas? I
would greatly appreciate any help.
Thanks,
Bob

It sounds like a settings problem. There are also several series of 1270
curves out there. The best are those that start with "vm70."

The settings are as follows:

Photoshop general color settings (Edit, Color Settings) should be Photoshop
5 defaults, except that the RGB Working Space is changed to Adobe RGB
(1998).

Epson driver dialog box settings:

(Only the critical ones for the VM inkset are noted.)

	Media Type: Matte Heavy Weight,

	Ink: Color

	Print Quality: 1440

	Color Management: No Color Adjustment

	Print Space: Same as Source

Be sure there is no embedded profile in the file.

Hope this works.

Paul,
Thank you very much for the help. I've tried these settings and the quality
has improved somewhat, however, the prints are still coming out looking
somewhat muddy. I'll try contacting MIS and see if they can offer any ideas.
Thanks again,
Bob
