QTR confusion - 1280 and UT2 inks

QTR confusion - 1280 and UT2 inks

2004-03-08 by Ranyart

I am trying to figure our QTR with linux and using
the appropriate profiles.

I noticed this link on the profile download section of the
web site: http://harrington.com/QTR/1280-UT2.sit

Should I be using this under linux? Or, as the .sit file
would suggest, is this MAC specific?

Also, once I get the appropriate curve setup, I noticed that,
in the linux KDE print driver, that you can pick one or two
curves, then vary the percentages of each curve.

If I have, say a neutral curve, should I pick this for curve
one, and nothing for curve two, then make the percentage
ratio 100/0 ??

Roy has a lot of documentation, and I have followed the .pdf
instructions under the files section of this website, but I can't
seem to "get my head around" figuring out QTR!

Any and all followups appreciated!

The curve(s) have to match your inkset. If you are set up with UT-2
inks then that would be the proper set of curves. The 1280 inksets that
are in the ExampleInks folder are for various MIS or Cone inksets. The
curves for Linux and the Mac are the same - both are unix based
operating systems.

You will need to get the stuffit expander for Linux in order to
decompress the sit file. Once decompressed it can be used in Linux.

If you are using a variable inkset such as MIS-VM then you would use a
cool curve and a warm curve. If you are using one of the neutral inksets
such as MIS-FS or MIS-FSN then you only need to use one (in the curve
one position).

That is correct.

The Linux version is very much a do it yourself kit but the pieces are
pretty much all there to plug into the proper places.

Good luck, it is a bit of a job but very much worth the effort.

Finally got this working! Thanks for the comments.

My even bigger challenge was finally clearing a clog in my 1280. I
could not get consistant nozzle checks to save my life, no matter what
trick or cleaning procedure I tried.

Based on something I read on another site, I bought a fresh set of
Epson ink cartridges ($50 ouch), and put them in the printer. Ran a
few cleaning cycles, and, almost like magic, the clogs disappeared. I
replaced my UT2 inks, and it works like a dream. I write this here in
case anyone in the future is looking for a fix, and stumbles on this
post.

As to QTR and Linux, I wish we had a seperate forum for this
software.

Also, as to the helpful pdf file with directions- the screen captures
from Linux have changed somewhat, and could probably stand to be
updated. For instance, using Webmin, I could not pick the QTR driver.
I had go into a KDE print manager, where it was pretty simple to
accomplish. Webmin is probably not even needed.

Also, the .pdf instructions assume your using a non-KDE file manager
when you are executing the Run-Quad-Profile- I was not able to
execute within KDE, but, you can just run the command on the command
line, and it will ask you to type in what profile you want to use.

I'd be glad to update this document, if it would be helpful to
anyone...

The set up is a bit different for the various Linux distributions. I
wrote the original pdf for RedHat 9 which is well on the way to being
defunct. Fedora is different as is SuSE. The problem is that each of the
distributions requires a somewhat different approach to setting the QTR2
version of the PPD for the printer being used. The easiest way, I think,
is to use WebMin. With SuSE it is not necessary, with Fedora, to my
knowledge, it is. Printing is still a bit of a hangup. I print from the
command line using a modified form of David Wroblewski's QPR script. The
advantage is that the print parameters can be set at the time of
printing including the curves and split. A useful utility is GTKLP which
gives a graphical interface to set the parameters in the ppd if you
choose not to use the command line.

As far as I am concerned, feel free to update the pdf.
