Increased Grain

Has anyone has problems with their quad tone prints looking grainy? I'm working from
4x5 using an Imacon Flextight, started using Photoshop CS and am scanning in color 16
bit and they look terrible.

Suggestions?

Taking out the default sharpening in the Imacon software by
applying -120 in the sharpener setting ?

If smooth on-screen tonal transitions that print with dot-sized
harsh breaks in tone are what you're seeing your paper may be
too dry. Raise the humidity.

Consider separating issues due to the scan from issues due to the print. For example,
if you made a smooth ramp (0-100%) in photoshop and printed it, does it still look
grainy?
If it's a print problem, look at profiles, nozzles, ink feed etc to all work as they
should.
If it's a scan problem, maybe you are using Imacon defaults meant for low ISO
chromes. Usually that would be 250 in the "texture" settings. Try 0 before you turn it
off completely; there is good reason to have some sharpening in there. Wisdom from
Imacon users is to use a 2 stage sharpening: Let the Imacon driver do some "basic"
amount that only compensates for sharpness lost by the optics and CCD etc, and then
do the rest in Photoshop depending on the use of the file.
