CFS and ink quandry

CFS and ink quandry

2004-03-23 by Johnny Eades

Hello all,

It's me again asking for some help in making an informed decision
about a CFS for my Epson 1280 printer. After almost two years of
trail and error and help from the kind posters on this newgroup,I
have arrived at a point in my digital endeavors that I can make a
print that is just what I want. The monitor matches the print so it
really is WYSIWYG (finally). The inkset I use is MIS Full Spectrum
Neutral in refillable cartridges. The FSN works just fine with
anything I throw at it. It works just fine with PiezoBW plugin as
well as PiezoBW ICC and even just from Photoshop with no curves
applied for printing. I know I've read the warnings about that not
supposed to be the case, but it does work that way. The inks are from
MIS and are labeled C LC-E M LM-E Y. The C M Y are from the Quad
set and the LC AND LM are from the Hextone set for the Epson driver.

MIS website mentions the phasing out of the Quadtone inks in favor
for the Ultratone family on new inks developed by our own Paul Roark.
I have sent email to MIS but haven't heard from them yet, so I would
like to ask the collected wisdom available on this newgroup for
guidance in this dilemna. I have spent time, ink, and money and would
not like to start all over again in the case of the inks being phased
out. Advice on any alternatives short of starting all over again will
be most welcome. The Piezotone inks are much too expensive for my
budget and will invoke the trial and error method all over again. I
would like to stick with MIS inks.HHHHHEEEEEELLLLLPPPPP.

Your frind in a photographic quandry,

Johnny

Johnny,

Try carts with any new inkset before investing in a CFS.

The new Piezo ICC approach has similar ink positions to the MIS FS-E setup,
but not exact. The new versus old quad Piezo positions are:

New C = old C,
New LC = old M,
New M = old M,
New LM = Y, &
New Y = old Y.

I suspect MIS will adopt that as a replacement for the FS-E ink setup.
There is no reason to have 2 ink systems that are so similar. This kind of
ink distribution would work with the Piezo ICCs as well as with the Epson
driver. It has a bit too much light ink in it for my liking, but it'll
produce very smooth prints.

You might be happiest with the new UT-FSN inkset and the ink distribution
above. At some point I'll probably try it and make some curves for it, but
I'm too busy with other things right now. It should be easy for you to make
a simple grayscale curve that matches the print to your monitor.

Good luck.

Johnny: Like you I found the original FSN-E to be very good, very
consistent and real WYSIWYG. (the Woolfe workflow & curves worked well
for me) I find the UT-2 to be the same. But I struggled with the
original UT. So much so I ordered a new set of 4 oz. bottles of FSN-E
but never installed them as I tried UT-2 and found it to my liking.
That's in my CFS now.

Paul's advice about trying in plain carts before committing your CFS
is right on point. If you want a fresh set of unopened 4oz. FSN-E
bottles, contact me off list. I'll make you a real deal.
