All lights flashing on my 1270

All lights flashing on my 1270

2004-04-01 by Bob Thornburg

I've been trying to get the MIS CFS to work on my Epson 1270 for
months now! Every time I have a breakthrough, some new problem crops
up. MIS has been terrific with their help and support, but now I
seem to be at a dead end. All of the lights are flashing on my
printer. The Epson book says that means an 'internal' problem, and
to contact Epson about it. I can't imagine that Epson will help
since I've modified the printer. Does anyone have any idea what
could cause this?
Thanks so much,
Bob

Bob,

Oh Dear...
I had this on my 1270 (no CFS, Epson inks) when it was still in
warranty. The Epson service agent couldn't fix it - it needed a
replacement machine. Probably not what you wanted to hear.

Excellent Info John! I'm printing it out now to take with me on calls.

Another thing that can cause the observed problem is overloading the
print carriage motors. This happens most often in the field when a
big paper jam stops the carriage, or someone leaves the ink hold-down
cover up a little (on printers equipped with them) so it hits the
inside of the printer somewhere and jams. The printers appear to
monitor the current through the carriage motors and shut the printer
down to prevent permanent damage.

Is it possible that your ink feed system is hanging up or binding?
Perhaps something else is overloading the system. You could try
putting a set of regular cartridges back in.

Usually unplugging thee printer and plugging it back in will clear
the flashing lights resulting from an overload if you have dealt with
the underlying problem.

Otherwise if you've been through everything on the link above, you
may have the dreaded "red flash of death" informing you your printer
is now permanently nonfunctional without service.

If so, you are probably stuck dealing with Epson's warranty
department. Theoretically, by law in the US, the mere use of 3d party
ink is not grounds for dishonoring your waranty. If you have modified
the printer in the process, you are on your own. The support
department may well be helpful, it is worth a try. The worst that
will happen is that you will be no worse off than you are now.

In the future, if you are going to be doing things that might void
your warranty, buy your printer from a store that sells 3d party
warranties like CompUSA or BestBuy (In the US). You can get 2-3 years
at about $35/year and they don't worry about using non-standard inks.
Also, these are generaly carry-in replacement warranties so you can
be back up and running the same day with a brand new machine. If the
machine you bought has been upgraded, you get the new model at no
extra charge.

It costs a bit more than buying off eBay or online, but it is great
to just march down to the store and drop off the old one and come
home with the latest model. Unfortunately, none of them carry
anything above the 800 or 2200.

I hope you can get it back up and working.

No...sigh...not what I wanted to hear. But, thanks for the reply.
