BO on Photo Rag - Streaking Problem

BO on Photo Rag - Streaking Problem

2004-04-22 by wifflebomb

I love the look of "black only" on Enhanced Matte, using my Epson
2200 with standard inks and software. I also love Hannemuhle Photo
Rag 308 paper, but printing BO on PR gives me uneven streaks,
expecially noticable in the dark tones. The streaks run parallel to
the print-head direction but it's not "banding" in the traditional
sense -- it looks like you dragged your finger across the print at
about 1-inch intervals.

I have tried various Epson paper profiles but it always looks the
same -- admittedly, I don't have an official Photo Rag profile (I'm
not sure there are any that don't assume you're using all 7 inks).

As I said, the BO prints look great on EM, and full-color b&w
looks "correct" on PR (just the usual issues) so I don't think it's a
mechanical problem, just a paper/ink/software incompatibility
somewhere.

Can anyone provide help in printing BO on PR using a 2200? Is there
a profile that gives good results for this application? Has anyone
seen this problem? Thanks.

Try doing a new head alignment on PR as Photo Rag is a lot thicker than Enhanced Matte.

Thick paper like this should also be fed through the manual feed slot
in the rear with paper thickness lever at envelope position.

Do you really think it's a head-alignment problem? The streaks look
like the ink has soaked in unevenly, as if the ink was sprayed a
little thinner for a few passes or, alternatively, the paper's ink
absorption is reduced in places. Wouldn't a head-alignment problem
produce small, sharp gaps rather than broad streaks? I'm not arguing
with you, just trying to understand this stuff better.

I guess the best way is to test it. Also do what Carl mentioned - feed thick papers through
the back.
