Soft Proof Profiles

Soft Proof Profiles

2004-04-21 by Tom Salyer

I am trying to install some new paper profiles ( from Image Print ) so
I can soft proof my images in Photo Shop CS, Mac OS 10.2, and can not
find where they belong.

My Image Print vendor Lexjet told me they go into system > color sync >
profiles, but when I try to drop the profile in, it bounces out and a
message says I can not modify "profiles".

This folder has only six profiles, five like "generic CMYK
profile.icc", and one sRGB.

But, in photo shop, if I go to view > proof > proof set up dialog box,
and pull down the "profile" drop down menu, I must have nearly 100
profiles to choose from, from color spaces RGB1998, 10% dot gain,
Euroscale Coated, every monitor profile I've made, commercial profiles
I've purchased, all the Epson printer profiles I've ever loaded up.

Where in the world do these profiles live on my computer? I need to
drop in my new Image Print ones, and am going nuts :)

Many thanks in advance,

Put your profiles in the folder Library>Colorsync>Profiles.

Carl;

I've tried this, reopened Photo Shop, and I do not see the new profile in the
soft proof dialog.

Also, when I go view > etc I see many more profiles in the pull down menu
than I see in the Color Sync folder. Entire sets of profies are missing.

If these are icc profiles that you put in the
Library>Colorsync>Profiles folder they should appear in the drop down
list when you select View>Proof Set-up>Custom in PS. Then you select
the icc profile you want to use for soft-proofing and save a soft-proof
profile with whatever name you wish. Are the IP profiles standard icc
profiles?

I'll bet they have different internal names than external, not wise
profile building. Double click on one of them, it will open in the
colorsync utility. Scroll down to "Localized description strings" and
see what ASCII Name says. Then see if you can find that in Photoshop
preview, that's how any app whould see it.
If that works, complain to whoever made them. OSX should see either
icc or icm just fine.

Tom,

Don't know about on a Mac, but I use the IP delivered paper profiles for
soft-proofing in PS CS all the time on my PC. So, I guess I'm saying, they
should work fine as delivered.

If you download a profile you can rightclick on the file and you get
the option to "Install profile" (with PC using XP) and it installs
to the right folder. You have to restart Photoshop to see the
profile. It seems like Photoshop only reads the profile folder
during the start and put it in the memory. If you put the profile in
the folder when Photoshop is open you will not see it until you
restart Photoshop.

Tom,

Try to keep 'your' custom profiles in 'your' user directory.
That's why you are seeing permission bounces.

Put your profiles in username (your admin
name)/library/colorsync/profiles
