1290 versus 1280 driver

1290 versus 1280 driver

2004-05-03 by Bernie Ess

Hi,
I just received my new 1290, because my older 1160 broke down (was a
real workhorse, and excellent quality prints). I hope I will also
receive my UT2 CFS inkset soon, until then I'd like to know if
someone knows of a procedure to make the 1290 work with the 1280
driver. As it is reported, the slightly different drivers will make
the 1290 print too dark with ther UT2 inks, and instead of tweaking
the curves I'd rather try to make the 1290 run with the 1280 driver.
I guess that the hardware should be virtually the same, am I wrong?

regards, Bernie

Paul will probably pipe up but I ran some tests for him using UT2 on
a 1290 with 1290 and 1280 drivers and there was no appreciable
difference between the 2 - his words not mine, as I only have the Mk1
eyeball and I couldn't tell any difference!

I presume you are in the UK Bernie. Drop me a line via my website,
might have some chatting to do about UT2.

Sad -- my old 1160 finally bit the dust also. I'm probably not going to
have it fixed this time.

My latest sample test strips from Europe suggest that the 1290 works the
same with the 1280 and 1290 drivers. So, I would not bother. However, on a
PC all one needs to do is download the 1280 driver from the US Epson site.
It seems to find the right printer. With Mac, one can't do this.

The latest 1290 test strips with the 1280 UT2 curves also looked quite nice.
I have not had the time to measure them, but I think you'll find them close
enough to use as is.

Me neither, I didn't try to get it fixed. However for those who are
interested, the 1160 can still be purchased new here in Germany, for
about 320 Euro. I upgraded to the 1290 because I often read here that
its dither pattern is slightly superior to the 1160.
On the other hand I find that the 1290-S feels much more plastic-
like. I hope it won't break.

So I will first try the UT2 with the 1290 driver, and if its not what
I expect qualitywise I try to get it work with the 1280 driver, I did
this already yesterday when I installed the new printer, but Windows
XP did definitely not recognice the printer during the 1280 driver
installation. Was the same when I once tried to make the 2100 work
with the 2200 driver. Did not work either here.

As soon as I receive the UT2 CFS, I will report the results.

thanks,

Bernie
