Keep an eye on http://www.inksupply.com/index.cfm?source=html/qn.html.

UT7, the variable-tone B&W inkset for the 2200 will soon be released.

If you are on a MAC look at QTR-
http://harrington.com/QuadToneRIP.html
I believe there are good options for nice warm prints without changing
to a 3rd party inkset. Others here will be able to tell you more.

The software mentioned earlier - PhotoKit - has toners that you apply to
the photo as layers in PhotoShop. The sepia and brown tones will give you
a beautiful warm tone B&W printed with the 2200 and its original inks. You
will have to convert the photo to RGB, but that's easy enough.

It's the best money I ever spent on software, besides
PhotoShop. http://pixelgenius.com/photokit-gallery/index.html

Hope this helps -

Check out www.bowhaus.com/inkjetcontrol/ . They have a free product called
open printmaker that does a nice job using the black, light black, inks to
produce a warm black print.

I can tell you what I do, though I don't have a very good technical
explanation. I use Epson UC inks in my 2200. For neutral tone b&w, I just
convert the RGB print to grayscale before printing, and it works fine. If I
attempt to print a neutral b&w print in RGB, then color shift sets in. For
warm-toned prints, I use PhotoKit and either sepia or platinum filters. By
using the Epson paper profiles posted on their site in Jan. 04 I get prints
that are an exact match to the monitor (calibrated with SpyderPro). This is
with the soft-proofing feature of Photoshop CS. Best of luck.

Ken,

I always seem to get a major increase in apparent grain or "noise"
when I apply the Photokit toners such as platinum. Have you noticed
this and if so, how have you been able to combat the issue? Thanks
for any info.

No, so far that is at least one problem I've not had. I'm using XP and
Photoshop 8, working with 16-bit images (actually I guess 14-bit coming from
the Nikon scanner and 12-bit coming from the Canon). I'm not sure 16 vs 8
bit makes that big a difference now, but I use it because "it's there" and I
don't know what's coming down the road re printers. Better I hope. I
flatten the image and use the PK output sharpener and soft-proofing before
printing. What are you using? BTW do you ever go to the Quartz Mountain
workshops? I'm in OKC and last year we had one with Kevin Bubriski that was
excellent.

Thanks for the reply Ken. You know, I've just been using 8 bit files
even though I have CS.... ;-( Maybe I should rethink that! Just
seems that whenever I do a conversion to B&W filters or toning in
Photokit that I see an increase in Noise.

Looks like you also have the Photokit Sharpener. Does ot work well
for you? I've always used masks and done several levels of manual
sharpening. I wouldn't mind automating that if possible!

Hmmm. I don't know about the Quartz Mountain stuff but that sounds
interesting. If you know of a web site or someplace I could get more
info please shoot me an e-mail if you get the chance. I've enjoyed
looking at your site several times and wondered if you were in OKC.
