21-Step+.jpg in the files - warning and question

2004-05-15 by Clive Moss

I have been learning the workflow suggested by Clayton Jones for BO
printing on my 1280, and discovered that the 21-Step+.jpg dated
2/19/2003 (Paul Roark's Enhanced 21 Step Wedge) image in the files
section for this group has a has a non-linear transfer function.
I straightened it out, and got better separation in the blacks.

This is the first time that I discovered where the transfer function is
(thanks Clayton).

This curve may affect your results if you print it without looking at
the transfer function in Photoshop under File>Print with
Preview>Output>Transfer.

My question is -- does the transfer function apply if one just does a
Print, rather than a print with preview?

You're welcome.

I don't know for sure, but seems to me it would apply. I know a real
good way to find out... :)

Yeah, I know -- but I thought I would ask, in case there were subtleties
in the setup that I was unaware of. I will test it.

Hello Clive,

Let us know what happens. BTW, on your web site I really like the BW
pic of the man sitting on the steps. I like the way all the lines
work, the planes, plus the bar across the top...really nice. I'll
bet it
makes a nice print.

Clayton

As I suspected, the transfer function becomes a permanent attribute of
the image (if you save the file, of course). It applies on any printer
even if Print with Preview is not used.

The consequence is that anyone who used the 21-step wedge to check out
their printer without removing the embedded curve will get a result that
does not apply to other images.

Thanks -- but I must confess that I have not yet printed it :-)
