ART-what is it?

ART-what is it?

2001-10-21 by ternahan

Steadman et al,

Did you see the story in yesterday's NY Times about the Damien Hirst
installation?
He set it all up in the gallery street window for his new show (Martin, I
think it looked like our studios)....they had the opening reception and that
night the custodian threw it out...said it looked like garbage...the gallery
owner was quick to point out that he had only "set it aside" (meaning they
were able to pull most of it out of the dumpster)...she was quoted as
stating that it was worth hundreds of thousands of dollars...staff was able
to put it back together, mostly. Hirst himself thought the whole thing was
hysterically funny.

Is art in the eye
of the beholders or in
the gallery's dumpster?

Well I may debate 'what art is??' but I sure know garbage when I see it...
and read it... ;-)

I'm with the cleaning man. Six figures for that?? maybe he'd like to
co-sign my house and split the proceeds??

Carolyn

PS: do you dream in Haiku? Wonderful! :-)

Is it possible
art reflects society,
culture and ourselves?

posterity and retire from this madness?

Worth hundreds of thousands of dollars?

If the answers were
known then we would not bother
creating either.

Hmmm - I think I'm glad I missed this ever-recurring thread. Personally
I've moved on from "What is art?" to "What is the meaning of life?" since I
think that will be an easier question to answer reasonably.

Yes, and asking oneself the question "What is the meaning of life?"
definitely
is the best foundation for creating art...

Burkhardt Kiegeland

Hmmm - I think I'm glad I missed this ever-recurring thread. Personally
I've moved on from "What is art?" to "What is the meaning of life?" since I
think that will be an easier question to answer reasonably.

And Monty Python pretty much answered the question years ago, so there you
go then.
