Ink mixing - MIS ut eboni with epson dye

2004-06-05 by kalooo12000

Have decided to go 1160 printer route with mis ut eboni inks for BW
printing.
Has anyone experienced any problems using the ut inks straight after
the standard epson dye inks?
I understand this should be OK, but am just a little concerned as to
whether I should flush the epson ink out with cartridges.

Regards, Keith

I've only had problems when I have not flushed the
1160's before using Eboni. It will save you alot of
headaches if you flush first.

Thanks for the feedback Don.

Am intending to try filling cartridges first before hooking up the
cfs system.
It did seem a little odd that mis dont seem to think it will be a
problem without flushing, but other suppliers do consider it to be an
issue.

Re: [Digital BW] Ink mixing - MIS ut eboni with epson dye

2004-06-06 by Bob Michaels

MIS tells you not to mix Eboni and dye in the same cart, but it is OK
to remove a dye cart and just put in an Eboni one. My experience
agrees with this. I've been swapping my Eboni filled CFS carts and dye
ink prefilled carts while trying to solve a CFS feed problem in my
1280. No nozzle clogging that a few cleaning cycles wouldn't cure.

In fact MIS very explicitly tells you that if you have a persistent
clog in an Eboni CFS system, remove it and put in factory prefilled
carts (i.e. dye) to clear the clog and get the system working right,
then reinsert the CFS carts. This is the most critical step according
to Bob Z at MIS (plus my experience over a few years) and from the
discussions on this list, the most ignored.

With my 890 and UT2 inks I went from Epson carts right to UT2 inks. I'm using MIS' CFS so
I made sure the before I pulled the Epson carts the CFS was ready to go as I did not want
to pull the Epson carts and have the head exposed too long to air because of fear of ink
drying out.

I've never had a problem with my 1280 and eboni -
especially when changing from epson dye. However the
1160 seems much more prone to eboni problems - bad
mojo maybe. After about 5 good prints the prints get
very banded. All three of mine just hated the mix, so
it is better with the 1160 model to use actual
cleaning cartridges.

Hopefully I will not be swapping back and forth between bw and dye,
but having just bought a new 1160 I do not want to clog it up by
doing the wrong thing.

Anyone else run eboni straight after epson dyes without problems?

Many thanks for the input.

Keith

Keith, another thing I haven't noticed anyone mention is
the fact that you still have a bit of residual color in
the printhead and ink lines. Even if you don't have any
incompatibility in chemistry, I would suggest flushing
just because you won't see a gradual change of neutral
or strange tonality while the small amount of residual
color ink dilutes slightly contaminates the b/w inks.

Kris,

I think that is a very good argument for flushing the system.

Thanks, Keith
