UT-FSN-1160 and Roark Curves For UT-FSN

UT-FSN-1160 and Roark Curves For UT-FSN

2004-06-16 by donbga

This past weekend I tried the curves and workflow created by Paul
Roark found on the MIS website for the UT-FSN inkset on an 1160.

I found the result quite terrible and the instructions confusing, so
apparently I'm not doing something correctly.

I was using EEM setting my color space to Adobe 1998 and found that 1
curve gave extremely posterized results, and two other curves
lightened the print way too much and dark tones looked as though
there was a veil over those areas.

By comparison when using the R9/Cone driver and the John Wolfe work
flow results are much better, Wolfe's workflow produced the best
print by far, WYSIWYG in fact and I'm using a calibrated and profiled
monitor.

Have other people using the Roark curves, etc. with UT-FSN
experienced the same results?

Thanks,

Don Bryant

Don:

Don't know about the UT-FSN, but I'm using U2s with a 1280 and the
prints are very, very good. Assuming that you know to change back to
RGB before you print, right.

You might share your work flow. Your making sure that your printing
in color and no color management right?

I used to use John Woolf's workflow with old FSN-E in my 1280 and
found to to yeild great prints and was very very easy to use. I
corresponded with John a few months ago and he unfortunately has no
interest in updating it for the new inks.

I've got great admiration for Paul Roark and everything he's done.
But if the Wolfe workflow works, why not just stick with it?

Hi Don,

I'm using both FS and FSN on my 1160s and I love the results. Right
at the moment I'm printing FSN Photo Black and FS Eboni Black. The
best looking results with the Photo Black is with the Ilford Smooth
Pearl paper though I found various Hawk Mountain micro ceramic glossy
also works well with it. But I definitely like the matte (and coated)
prints better.

Yes.

I'll check that to be certain, the workflow is what is described in
the download from MIS.

Thanks,

Don

Yeah I wish I could switch easily from Eboni to Photo K, Right now
I've got only one 1160 and don't have room for another printer in my
life.

Thanks,

Don

Hi:

When I called MIS, the tech told me to use the profiles setting in
the epson driver, if you do that you use the profiles changes
twice, and thus very bad output. Check no color management in the
Epson print driver, and it should work. I knew this from previous
pigment ink use.
