C84 vs the 4000=A TIE

C84 vs the 4000=A TIE

2004-07-18 by Joe Davajon

I thought I would contribute a comment that some may have some trouble believing. Be
assurred that I, too, found my conclusion difficult to accept but, as they say, the proof is in
the pudding. I have a 4000 which has delighted me! The color is impeccably accurate and
pleasing. The black and white printing is better than any other printer I've owned. Out of
the box good black and white prints. Premiere Art Spray finishes off the color prints and I
am totally satisfied with the final result. Now, here's what I want to share with the group:
I'm one of those who can't resist a good deal so when I got my C84 for $7.50 I was elated!
So, just for fun, I thought I would print the same file with both the 4000 and the C84. I
figured I could then see the far superior B@W printing ability of the 4000. It was not to be.
Both printers produced the same quality print. I couldn't tell them apart. It took a while
for this to sink in! I asked myself: "I paid $1800 for a printer that can be matched by my
$7.50 printer? There was no discernable difference between the two prints in shadow
detai, tonal smoothness, sharpness, and Dmax. So, if a person is going to be satisfied
with prints no bigger than 8x10, the C84 will the job as well. I've owned the Epson 750,
the 760, the 890, the 1280, the 4000, and the noble C84, and the latter two are the best.
Of course all the above is subjective. In conclusion, all the above was done using all OEM
inks.
Happy Printing!
Joe

Hello Joe,

Thanks for the report. Food for thought for a lot of folks, I'm sure.

I'm wondering if you can do an experiment for me, it won't take long
or use up much of anything. I'm a great fan of Black Only printing,
and I recently saw several BO prints from a 4000 and was impressed by
the unique dither pattern which seemed to eliminate all dither
banding. Your comments make me wonder if the C64 has the same dither
pattern as the 4000?

Could you make a small print on both machines using the Black Only
setting and examine them with a loupe to see if they use the same
pattern? If the C64 uses that pattern there might be one sitting on
my desk before long. Thanks very much if you can find time to do
this.

Regards,
Clayton

Clayton,
I would be delighted to accomodate you. I will do the
above if you prefer, but I'd find it interesting to
subject the prints to your experienced eye. If you'd
like, I'll make a BO print on each printer and mail
them to you for your examination. I would welcome
your critique on the two prints regarding printer
performance. Printing size? Would 8x10's suffice? I
need an address to mail to, and will promptly submit
the prints for your scrutiny.
P.S. I have been doing nothing but B0 with the 4000
and have been astonished how well the printer
performs.
Joe
